Seeing young and good scientists like @lizrenner.bsky.social layed off like this is so heartbreaking, I hope things will improve soon...

Absolutely terrible. @lizrenner.bsky.social is an amazing scientist, colleague, and friend. SMFH. The attacks on our science, public lands, and PEOPLE of this country are real. We will ALL be affected. www.keloland.com/keloland-com...

@lizrenner.bsky.social has been on my mind a lot the last week. I can only hope that our field doesn’t lose her, and the thousands others going through the same experience, permanently. We’ll all be worse off if we do. 🐟🐠🌎🧪

Fish can actually be aged with any calcified body part, including fin rays, scales, and opercles! Otoliths are more accurate, but scales and fin rays can be taken without killing the fish. During undergrad, I aged several thousand bluegill scales from 4 lakes to determine growth rates

What!? Oh yes

Phew, I'm back. Took a break during this holiday season, paid me also a nice Strep infection just after Christmas, I'm now 2 days since the beginning of the antiobiotics and finally feeling better just in time to begin this semester. 🫠

Grad student positions available with the Fraser Lab (not on bsky) at Concordia U in Montreal! I got my PhD there, and I can’t say enough good things about the lab, the city, and the field sites. Spread the word!

Can’t get over how weird this new catfish is …

Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus, the “Deepwater Wrasse” This is a really beautiful species native to northeast Australia, New Caledonia, and southern Vanuatu. It belongs to a small lineage of very distinctive fairy wrasses with only two other species.

Have a holly, jolly (roger) #Fishmas! ☠️🐟 Ahoy from the Pirate Perch (Aphredoderus sayanus), kicking off the first day of #GreatLakes #25DaysofFishmas! This fish is secretive, nocturnal, and has a very… unique anatomy - and it's the answer to this week's #SundayFishSketch mystery theme!

A pirate perch for this #25daysoffishmas #SundayFishSketch crossover.

Southern Quebec is losing its wetlands at an alarming rate, all this fueled by ineffective application of the "no net loss" principle by the governement. Locals are stepping-up to raise the issue and protect what is remaining. therover.ca/why-are-queb...

The most wonderful time of the year, the #SundayFishSketch and #25DaysofFishmas crossover! This week, I guessed our mystery fish was the Pirate Perch, a fish charismatic little fellow!
