A book I always recommend is Jaroslav Švelch's "Gaming the Iron Curtain": ironcurtain.svelch.com By portraying gaming in Communist Czechoslovakia in the 80s, it also shows gaming outside a "game industry" logic - hobbyist making games, peripherals & game zines for fun, self-expression & activism.

Aha, my piece on Blood Typers is up on PC Gamer now too! Great game. Resident Evil Outbreak mashed up with Typing Of The Dead. Proper co-op survival horror played entirely by typing words. High replay value, lots of options, and more content coming in updates. It's also cheap.

$20 a page?! Christ, let's do the math. The most well-paid manga translator I know makes around $1000 per volume. A volume is about 150-200 pages, so at best, that's about $6.70 per page. $20 in 1999 is worth about $37 in 2025. That would be $5,500 for a 150-page volume in 2025.

This is fully righteous indignation. Balatro is not gambling. It may have rules similar to poker but it is an entirely solitaire game that only uses the concept of money in the most abstract sense. Unlike EA football games which have kids pump real money in to gamble on tradeable character cards.
