Steve does a good job unpacking why the idea of “neutral,” “unbiased” and “objective” journalism is not only problematic, but impossible News orgs are themselves often to blame for creating these unrealistic expectations in the minds of news consumers rather than explain their editorial processes

Whose side was Trump's America on when it came to a UN resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Russia, North Korea and Belarus. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/24/w...

The latest episode of @socialistdogmom.bsky.social's "Weird Little Guys" podcast, "They Got What They Wanted", is far from stand-alone, but I think it can be listened to that way - and it's timely and important and sad. www.iheart.com/podcast/1119...

Apple is really determined to get me to watch a 90+ minute YouTube ad for iPhone 16e. Yeah, maybe… if you give me a free phone…

Sounds a bit like projection on the part of a guy who pretends to be running so many companies at once…

Props to @techconnectify.bsky.social for this part of his latest video: youtu.be/QEJpZjg8GuA?...

🗳 Ontario Election 2025: The Best Strategic Vote is for Proportional Representation! 🗳 The platforms are out—here’s where Ontario’s major parties stand on proportional representation and a Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform: 🧵👇

The Doug Ford govt will spend $1.3B funding 45 school building projects across Ontario—and not a single one in the Toronto District School Board, the biggest board, where the repair backlog is huge. @wencyleung.bsky.social with an important election story. thelocal.to/ontario-educ...

S&P499, G6… an era of attempting to sustain “normal minus” until normal cannot be sustained at all

This alone should be grounds for terminating Ontario’s contract with Starlink immediately.

Modern problems require modern solutions

On the “flying hazards” point, there was a fatal incident recently where a small cargo plane hit a factory stack that was built in (and emitted steam into) an airport’s flight path. Not clear yet but possible it was improperly lit/painted and probably shouldn’t have been permitted.

Meta blowing this much money on a bad VR/virtual real estate scam isn’t just embarrassing. It’s apparently SO embarrassing that Zuck changed his real-life avatar to “MMA douche” as part of a PR campaign to blame all the bad ideas on women and minorities. Utterly shameful leadership.

“They're trading their eyewitness testimony of war crimes for social media comfort. They're choosing X followers—most of whom are probably bots tied to various influence operations, both foreign and domestic—over the international order that has prevented nuclear war for three generations.”

The advertising industry is being pressured to spend more on Twitter if they want to avoid government scrutiny. This is standard in illiberal democracies and autocracies, not in mature liberal democracies.

I can’t imagine that train is going to be capable of the kind of speed we’re all hoping for…

Early voting starts tomorrow! Plug in your postal code and find out where. You do NOT need a voter card, you do NOT need to have pre-registered, you need ID with your address. voterinformationservice.elections.on.ca/en/election/...

When everything gets more expensive, I’m not sure that’s indicative of “consumer gravitation” so much as a lack of options.

Trumps statements on Ukraine becoming completely indistinguishable from Russian propaganda is not surprising in the least, but it’s still shocking.

Ukrainians rally around Zelensky as he delivered his sharpest response to Trump yet. Soldiers told us, “Russia doesn’t want to negotiate with Ukraine, it wants to destroy it." Online, Ukrainians said, “Russian occupation is not peace, it is a death camp.” www.wsj.com/world/zelens... (gift link)

I suggest that this is a sign that it’s necessary to treat the situation in the US with the utmost seriousness, and prepare for the worst.

Trump just blamed Ukraine outright for Russia’s invasion. ‘You shoulda never started it,’ he said. What a lie, a Russian lie—from the President of the US.

One of the last things that kept me using the other site was timely current events info. I came here and used a starter pack to follow a ton of Canadian media. Now I get a bit too much news. Like, hyper-local news from rural BC. Maybe more than I need to know.

Canada, the 51st state? ‘Over our dead bodies,’ say Indigenous leaders. First Nations aren’t taking Trump’s comments lightly, reports Brandi Morin, and say they have both international law and economic leverage on their side. ricochet.media/indigenous/c...

When the Americans don’t know about the FLQ yet

The FDA be like

Interesting that Musk here explicitly accepts that deceptive election interference warrants “a long prison sentence”. Remember when Musk was reported to have exclaimed that if Trump didn’t win, he would go to prison? Why was he so worried? I wonder. nypost.com/2024/10/07/u...

Peace talks about Ukraine, without Ukraine at the table, are not peace talks. They are imperialist powers, sitting down to carve up the world. Image detail from “En Chine: Le gâteau des Rois et... des Empereurs” Le Petit Journal Supplément Illustré, January 16, 1898. Artist: H. Meyer. #skystorians

At our old apartment, I would often shovel the whole block on our side of the street. I won’t pretend it was entirely altruistic… most of my homeowner neighbours drove and couldn’t be bothered shovelling the sidewalk for days. But I had to walk to the TTC.

I wonder if this is the crew that has a YouTube channel

Never get tired of the people from my hometown who spend 360 days a year complaining about their taxes and the other five wonders why snow removal isn't instantaneous. Huh, I wonder if your obsessive desire not to pay for public services reduces those services' effectiveness.

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

We are pretty darn sick in this house. Not fun!

Soft power not go boom boom!!

Binged the Apple Vietnam series. A good reminder: people who say the US could’t possibly gin up a rationale to get itself bogged down in a self-destructive, counter-insurgency for years and kill millions of people to ultimately achieve nothing are… not smart.

Nosferatu is a millennial?

Nice Americans, a plea: There are many of you here. Hello. Please stop imagining the benefits of Canada being consumed by America. Instead advocate against this horrific notion. Wasting time imagining it happen is time you can better spend fighting against it. Best, Paul, a Canadian
