On January 17, 1929, the character Popeye first appeared in the newspaper comic strip Thimble Theatre. He was created by Elzie Crisler “E.C.” Segar.

On January 14, 1920, Castor Oyl (Olive's brother) first appeared in Thimble Theatre by E. C. Segar

Comics are philosophical.

I am not the first to point out that King Features laid off the world’s preeminent Popeye expert just as the character is entering the public domain. Publishers, you have the chance to do the funniest thing ever.
