I am continually surprised by just how beautiful #Sutherland #Scotland is despite living here!!! #Saturday

I keep promising myself that I will go and visit all the other amazing places there are to see in #Edinburgh but I somehow I can't stay away! #NMS #Happyplace

Possibly the best preserved example of an Iron Age wheelhouse on North Uist. Amazingly it has an under floor air duct to feed the fire. The range and quantity of finds suggests that it was occupied for several centuries, perhaps into the Viking period. More… 1/2

Thank you to #SSSACS @edinburgharchaeo.bsky.social for inviting me to present my research today. Great to see so many @insuhi.bsky.social and @uhiarchaeology.bsky.social students presenting and attending #ThinkUHI #archaeology

Great to hear @orkat3.bsky.social on her red deer work at #Ssasc @uhiarchaeology.bsky.social

The team behind the award-winning Uist Virtual Archaeology Project have been awarded funding for a new three-year digital heritage interpretation project in the Outer Hebrides. #archaeology #ThinkUHI archaeologyorkney.com/2025/02/12/u...

#FindsFriday Possible #Neolithic #Reddeer skull and antler. Found at Skaill Bay #Orkney close to #SkaraBrae. Multiple deer deposits have been found across Orkney, yet deer became extinct between 900-1200AD, my research is exploring why!

#Broch hopping today in sunny #Caithness. Dunbeath broch was marvellous. #Scotland #IronAge

I spent the evening standing in the freezing cold, in a lay-by near Whitehaven Cumbria. I doubt I'll ever witness anything more remarkable than a murmuration. Stunning.

Forsinard Flows #UNESCO #WHS #Sutherland on a cold February day. The lochans were frozen over, but the views were stunning.

Tell me you're in #Orkney without telling me you're in Orkney!!

Thanks to @archscot.bsky.social magazine for featuring my #prehistoric #reddeer research along with @archaeoholz.bsky.social research on the importance of #Shells and the LIFTE project on #Scotlands continental trade. @uhiarchaeology.bsky.social #ThinkUHI #Zooarchaeology

The Battle for the Bard. Interviewed for the Herald newspaper @thinkuhi.bsky.social Lecturer Dr Paul Malgrati is in the news talking about his book on Robert Burns. Available today (Sunday, 26/01/25) from your local newsagent! #Scotland #research bit.ly/3PRkFpb

Listening to the wonderful @cerysmatthews.bsky.social on @bbcradio6musicbot.bsky.social interview Saltfish Forty, Orkney's finest. Sounding great boys 😍 #Orkney #celticconnections

Helen and I are collaborating on a piece of work later this year, and I'm very excited about it. Her work is wonderful, I love it 😍🦌🐚

Skara Brae is closed thanks to storm Éowyn, so here’s a #FindsFriday object from our museum. It’s an oyster shell in which a Neolithic painter mixed red ochre (from the local sandstone) some 5000 years ago. ca.75mm or 3 inches at its widest. Pots, people, walls, clothing: what did they paint? 🧪🏺🎨

#FindsFriday Carved stone balls from sites across Scotland in the #NMS collection. These enigmatic items, found mostly in East #Scotland and #Orkney are a reminder of how much of our past we still don't know.

First Faroes Shetland Research online Symposium of 2025 open for booking. 6/02/25 12.00 midday GMT. Focus = PhD student #research North Atlantic Islands. bit.ly/4hrlqRF @thinkuhi.bsky.social

The connections between #Orkney and #Wessex have always been strong. Regardless of whether the Altar stone is from Orkney or not, the fact it came from #Scotland is in itself amazing. @uhiarchaeology.bsky.social journals.uclpress.co.uk/ai/article/i...

Looking forward to having a glass of wine and listening to Paul's talk tonight. It's still a bit weird not living in #Orkney anymore and not going to these talks in person. It's great OAS can Zoom them 😍

The Lochview standing stones outside Ness HQ this morning. A very cold and frosty start to the day ❄️ More info on the two megaliths at www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk/lochview-sta...

A tradition still persisting in the UK. Urine-filled witch bottles are regularly found in the liminal areas fringing lay-bys, often associated with ritual caches of hedge-porn.

Sending up The Batsign. I'm looking at an enigmatic red deer antler artefact from an Early Neo context in England. Broken off at upper beam and then they've used groove and splinter to make a circular arrangement of weird ?needles? with interior wear. Anyone seen similar (other than Runnymede)?

Misty and moisty along the Strath of Kildonan this afternoon. A welcome break from coding data in NVIVO #Sutherland #phdlife

A new paper looking at the bone assemblage from Rousay’s Knowe of Rowiegar suggests that human remains were placed at different stages of decomposition in a more complex, muti-stage process for handling the dead. #archaeology #Neolithic #ChamberedTomb

When ypu happen to lookbup from laptop... it literally took my breath away! #Sunset #Sutherland

Saw this weird phenomenon today, sea smoke, when the cold river water meets the warmer sea water! The river rinning into the sea is partially frozen! #Winter #Snow #Sutherland #cold

#TombTuesday The #Neolithic cairn at Achnavanich #Caithness complete with visitor. Built approx. 1000 years before the associated standing stones, although now collapsed, you can still peer in, but the flooded burn meant I could only look from afar!!

Dates set for our 2025 excavations at The Cairns and Skaill farm. And don't forget 'Digging for Britain' next week. archaeologyorkney.com/2025/01/04/2... #Orkney #Archaeology #Excavation #IronAge #SouthRonaldsay #Rousay #ThinkUHI

This stone certainly has a story to tell... weird what you find when decorating #oldhouse #barnacles #Sutherland #housebythesea

Such a brilliant piece of archaeological detective work, #Caithness and #Sutherland, have much more archaeology to offer than just #brochs!!

No need for fireworks in #Orkney on New Year's Eve. #Aurora 📷 Thanks to Emma Brown

#Snowy #Sutherland. Walked to the beach with the pups first thing. More #snow to come I think!

Our final season of fieldwork saw a plethora of decorated stones - with this one turning up on the last few days on site.

#WinterWonderland at Forsinard Flows #Sutherland. The #snow has brought the #deer off the hills and (very)close to the road!
