Hey, higher ed leaders, this is what acting with courage looks like. Give it a try! We’ll support you.

Great piece about archival tissues by @otolithgirl.bsky.social. If you haven´t already, give it a read! 🐟🐢🦉🐋🧪

Trophic ecologists who work with stable isotopes I bring you a{nichetools} - a complementary package to {SIBER} and {nicheROVER} that allows you to work with data objects created by either pkg. Check it out! benjaminhlina.github.io/nichetools/ #rstats #stableisotopes #foodwebs

Congrats Erica Durante for publishing amazing research (+ your 4th PhD paper!). Erica developed methods to extract estrogen & progesterone from cephalopod beaks. Now we can get lifetime reproductive data from species we know little about! @aslo.org aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Yes, more love for the "rough" fish! As soon as someone starts caring, that´s the first step! :)

I am an editor at a scientific journal that's global in scope, with papers from all over the world. Until my EIC tells me otherwise, I will respond to any sections of papers referring to the "Gulf of America" with: "LOL. LMAO. No."

Happy to share that our paper "How quota cuts, recreational fishing, and predator conservation can shape coastal commercial fishery efforts" is finally published in CJFAS, with @rarlinghausfish.bsky.social, Sean Pascoe, Birgit Gassler and Simon Weltersbach cdnsciencepub.com/doi/full/10....

New paper by colleagues in Nature on global scale relevance of small scale fisheries (recreational fisheries excluded). Very nice read. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Our global study on the state of trust in scientists is now out in Nature Human Behaviour! 🥳 With a team of 241 researchers, we surveyed 71,922 people in 68 countries, providing the largest dataset on trust in scientists post-pandemic 👇🧵https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-024-02090-5

Elven stewardship of natural wonders in iceland. Makes me think, there must be some hard-working, humorless, grumpy gremlins in German folklore that can be leveraged into protecting rivers and coastlines, no? 😅 atmos.earth/an-elven-all...

New #iucn based assessment of conservation status once more shows inland fisheries is not a jey threat. It is pollution, habitat loss etc. in freshwaters. Therefore, attention should focus there. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Atlantic herring is one of the most abundant fishes in the world. In two new studies, we show that some herring in the Baltic Sea have become fish eaters. These piscivorous herring are genetically unique, grow fast, and play an important role in regulating stickleback populations.

A new #fishR post today showing newly modified functions in the #FSA package being used with #dplyr or #purrr to efficiently compute abundance (w/ removal/depletion data) or mortality (w/ catch-curve data) for multiple groups (e.g., species, area). #rstats fishr-core-team.github.io/fishR/blog/p...

Christmas paper, fresh from under the tree!!! Everyone measuring oxygen isotopes in fish otoliths, this year for Christmas, we´re making the whole story just a little bit more complicated for you (naughty!), but we also offer solutions (back on the nice list maybe…?) 🧪🐟🧵 doi.org/10.1016/j.fi...

This is the Christmas Darter (Etheostoma hopkinsi), a fish native to the American southeast so named for the colorful green and red coloration. There's a closely related subspecies that is called the 'Christmas Eve' or 'Hanukkah' darter (E. h. binotatum). Happy Holidays to all!

I see Freshwater Megafauna Christmas, and raise you Hecht Ruprecht! Germans will get it, Knecht Ruprecht is a partially demonic helper of Santa, carrying a cudgel/rod and a sack to punish naughty children. Figure comes from the same folklore as the better known Krampus. And Hecht means pike. 😁

Merry (freshwater) Mega(fauna) Christmas! 🎄

My first first-author paper was published this morning! Did you know eye lenses grow in layers throughout life and can be analyzed to study movement and foraging ecology. But eye lenses differ in bio molecular composition across fish taxa, especially for sharks! 🧪🌎🦑 link.springer.com/article/10.1...
