Subtle exercise! I noticed this older woman just holding her foot slightly off the metro floor and switching at every station. I just tried it and it does indeed “burn” as you need to hold it steady for roughly 2 min!

Like a balm for my soul. Great talk with @reenamahajan.bsky.social about building cities for people which must include and consider kids, women, etc - i.e., the majority of the population, not just those who can afford to buy a membership in car culture. + (are old enough, who aren’t impaired, etc)

#Economic arguments about car access often come up. Donald Shoup took an economist’s perspective to #parking demonstrating how inefficient and costly “free” (read: COMPLETELY #SUBSIDIZED) parking is. Have a listen to him and you’ll never see parking the same again!

Just a big ❤️ to #Concordia for being a downtown campus that is open to EVERYONE! Bathrooms, places to sit, eat and work! What a great service to society and to supporting sustainable travel and communities. Thank you 🙏!!!

High-speed rail is pretty essential for a large country like Canada to support more options to get between cities. This is long overdue. #hsr #canada www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Shift or improve policies? Using lifecycle GHG emissions we found greater efficiencies in terms of KMs or the number of trips shifting away from cars to #PT 🚌🚇🛤️or #AT🚶‍♀️🚲 than for #EV. This was examined based on Quebec's very low carbon content of kWh 🔌⚡ www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

My daughter drew these pictures to represent Wellington street with and without cars. #Verdun #Montreal I think they capture well how with cars, the road is a place that can kill and harm. Without cars, it becomes a social, community space that is attractive to the vast majority of people.

A video of #Wellington when it is #pedestrianized. You can really see the diversity of the population when cars are removed. youtu.be/6ENZ2RFkCE4?...

Over 1650 👧👦 since 2018 in Quebec have been victims of car drivers while using 🚌. A problem in the 👮‍♀️statement: They say parents complain, but they are causing the problem. Correction: parents who drive their kids to school cause the danger. NOT all parents. www.journaldemontreal.com/2025/01/27/t...

Nice turnout for the workshop on opening Wellington in #Montreal to people all year long. Great to see so many people open to participating in the process!

When talking about #AVs in my course, I show my engineering students 1st a video of some micro-simulation showing cars zipping through w/o stopping. Then I show them this to remind them that people also walk and cycle. I’m not against tech, just plz think when applying it. youtu.be/4SmJP8TdWTU?...

Today marks the 100th anniversary of a L.A. traffic ordinance that reshaped public space in the city and across the U.S. I spoke with historian Peter Norton (@norton.bsky.social) about how the auto industry helped limit pedestrian access to streets, paving the fast, deadly roads we navigate today.

My buddy @kmanaugh.bsky.social and I took the winter #bixi this morning to get to work. A great workout and feel wonderful having done it! Thank you Bixi! #bixidhiver #wintercycling #happycommute

How do we build a future where we don’t need to own a car? Fantastic episode with @gregmarsden-leeds.bsky.social @jilliananable.bsky.social and Ian Philips - worth a listen! open.spotify.com/episode/3i1X...

Interested in promoting the intersection of #transport and #publichealth? The International Professional Association for Transport & Health (IPATH) is looking for board members as a number of us have completed our two terms. Find out more about IPATH here: www.ipathinc.org

@danpiatkowski.bsky.social I missed you at TRB! I couldn’t get your sweet sweet signature on your book with all my markings- love that you highlighted #Oslo #heartzones where they protect children’s right to independent travel! #CIM

In the #accessibility workshop at #TRBAM, the need to consider safety in accessibility is being repeated again and again. We have examined how this impacts a vulnerable part of the population who are not able to independently use the adult-exclusive mode of car. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

In the #TRBAM workshop on accessibility, the need for #pedestrian infrastructure data. I heard about this great tool (Tile2Net) in the @trb-ame70.bsky.social committee meeting. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Ted Knowlton from Utah, highlighting how communicating using people’s underlying values. We’ve done that with climate change communication (see comment) and bike infrastructure (to come)

In transportation, we want to improve #accessibility. It is great to see how many people on the last day of #TRBAM were at the workshop!

The greatest takeaway I would see here is that reducing the speed is a much greater impact than vehicle lights. Maintaining high speeds and adding some small technological change won’t have the same impact on eliminating death in our traffic systems. #trafficdanger

Shirley Shiqin Liu presenting a nationwide analysis of 15-min neighborhoods, showed that 15-min neighborhoods are generally lower income than places that don’t have good local access. Such places are not for the rich, they facilitate low-cost transport - which is often more than 20% of 🏡 income.

Side discussion at TRB with unsolicited complements for @nondriver.bsky.social 😊

Megan Weir just highlighted a problem that I didn’t know about - “sideshows” where people spin donuts in the middle of intersections causing massive danger to the communities where they happen.

Greatest award ever! Thanks @trb-ame70.bsky.social #TRBAM

Could you estimate the level of traffic hazard at an intersection? Could you then do it in a systemic way? We made a tool for that at B492 #trafficdanger #TRBAM
