From David Abrams’  #SundaySentence project, readers share the best sentence they’ve read during the past week, “out of context and without comment.”

Erich Fromm, The Heart of Man (1964)

Can we stop calling billionaire CEO investors and world destroyers ‘rock stars’. They are the thing you rebel against. They aren’t articulating their pain into beauty. They are just dickheads making life a bit more shit.

One reason I look at so many Americans as, simply put, uncivilized.

French Senator Claude Malhuret: "Washington has become Nero’s court, with an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers and a jester high on ketamine... We were at war with a dictator, we are now at war with a dictator backed by a traitor."

Former 🇺🇸 ambassador to Russia 👇🏽

“The people are what matter to government, and a government should aim to give all the people under its jurisdiction the best possible life.” Words from Frances Perkins, FDR's labor secretary and an architect of Social Security. Remember this as the program is under attack.

We’re in this mess in large part bc the average American is uninformed about fundamentals of civics, history, basic biology, economics, etc, and media and the internet are not meeting the moment. Is anyone organizing teach-ins or similar for the general public, whether irl or online?

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

Writing involves both the expression and exploration of an idea, meaning that even as we're trying to capture the idea on the page, the idea may change based on our attempts to capture it. --John Warner (@biblioracle.bsky.social) in the intro to his book MORE THAN WORDS. #sundaysentence

Do this. Say this. 👇🏻

“Education determines the quality of governance. An investment in education takes a generation to bear fruit. Likewise, countries feel the impact of this disregard for education a generation later.” ― Maria Ressa, How to Stand Up to a Dictator: The Fight for Our Future #SundaySentence

First they came for the federal employees, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a federal employee ... You know the rest of the poem. Act accordingly.

They learned something from their first term. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a grift is a good guy with principles. So this time they're firing all the good guys with principles.

Trump will be remembered by future generations as the WORST traitor in American history, and his sycophantic political supporters will be compared to those who decades ago supported Hitler.

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The financial press doesn't encapsulate the thoughts of the market, obviously, but they do listen to chatter and it's interesting they don't mention the risks to equities of the Trump admin arbitrarily & illegally slashing fed gov't workforce, contracts, and grants. Wall Street still doesn't get it.

Bonjour from up north. For my #sundaysentence this week, back to Catherine Coldstream's "Cloistered" (been slow reading this month). "Once something is out in the open air and everyone is aware there is a problem, no one can afford to remain neutral or on the fence." Indeed, my friends; indeed.

Perfectly captured.

My slightly tardy #SundaySentence is from #IntheNameOfTheFather by #Balla and translated by Julia and Peter Sherwood "Not even habit helps because the minute you finally get used to something being bad things get even worse, and they get worse with every passing day."

"The more we stand up, the more others will stand up too; by standing up you’re inviting others to join you, making it safer to be a dissenter, and those not ready to join you will maybe question their facts or fear or allegiance to the Trump agenda." Rebecca Solnit in The Guardian #sundaysentence

He is evil. As soon as you accept that, every last bit of it makes sense.

This is a word of warning to all of us. Left, right, or anything else. Constantly reevaluating and learning.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
