A hover fly/flower fly (family Syrphidae) in a California native Carpenteria flower. Lots of syrphids mimic bees/wasps, but neither sting nor bite. Their larvae are often voracious predators of aphids and other small plant-eating insects. The markings on this one remind me of a mask. 🐙🌿 #insects
