Well put.

🤔 @pahlkadot.bsky.social

Thank you all for the kind words about my opinion piece yesterday. What no one is talking about is the incredible animation the lovely folks at the NYT did for it. Look closely. Who is wielding the clippers? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/o...

Anyone who cares about the core principles our of government will need to protect civil servants who defend the law. But a defensive crouch is the wrong response. If you’re mad about what Musk is doing to government, it’s time to go on the offense to reform it. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/o...

Jen Pahlka on the difference in good faith efforts to reform government versus Musk's wrecking ball approach. "But my goal — the goal of many Democrats and Republicans alike — has been to revitalize government. Mr. Musk seems to be trying to destroy it." - @pahlkadot.bsky.social

Today is Fork in the Road Day, and we should be thinking about legacy code all over government. www.eatingpolicy.com/p/jed

Seems like a good time to say this again.

Government reform on its face isn’t a partisan issue, so why does it seem to fall under the purview of Republicans? @pahlkadot.bsky.social tells @jerusalem.bsky.social why she thinks Democrats need to “get in the game” of reduction.

The piping of American government has multiple channels: civil service, contractors, consultants. That system was built to make orgs run lean, but it came with a fatal flaw: communication. In Hypertext, we unpack that.

@niskanencenter.bsky.social enter will be hosting a Law of abundance conference in early 2026, chaired by @nbagley.bsky.social and Zach Liscow. Here is the call for papers: www.niskanencenter.org/law-of-abund...

As you know, fixing federal hiring has been at the top of my wishlist for a long time. I had the chance to talk about this on OddLots with the amazing @tracyalloway.bsky.social and @thestalwartt.bsky.social , and it's out today. We cover some other stuff too. :) bloom.bg/3Cfti9V

Lessons from our past- how the federal government taught its managers to cut red tape: "Eisenhower's Bureaucrats" @KHawickhorst @pahlkadot.bsky.social @vgr.bsky.social (Plus- Eisenhower's 6th State of the Union) Fix it instead of throwing it away: roughlydaily.com/2025/01/10/d...

"The actual implementation of regulations has become far too invisible to the political class — and that has made achieving policy goals much more difficult across the government," @pahlkadot.bsky.social tells @jeffstein.bsky.social. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

Wild story: A TVA dam was famously halted in the 1970s over fears that it would threaten a rare endangered fish known as the snail darter. (Congress later approved the dam anyway.) Now, new genetic evidence suggests the snail darter was never even a real species: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/03/s...

Great piece by @pahlkadot.bsky.social on how broken US government hiring is. Someone needs to fix it, and I'll give full credit to Republicans if they get to it before Democrats do. www.eatingpolicy.com/p/dear-mr-ku...

New post, a short and odd one, but one you might like. What does politics look like from space? www.eatingpolicy.com/p/the-view-f...

“The obstacles that thwart the designs of one’s political opponents today become the frustrations your side faces when the political cycle turns again.” - @pahlkadot.bsky.social Nicely sums up what’s so frustrating about debt ceilings and government shutdowns (and filibusters, too).

🚨Massive new report from @pahlkadot.bsky.social + @andrewgreenway.bsky.social: Our roadmap for effective, efficient government.

SO appreciate @pahlkadot.bsky.social making the case that Congress is going to need to invest in its *own* capacity to play its role (as authorizer, funder, and overseer) of #DOGE or any other attempts to reform government. open.substack.com/pub/eatingpo...

We must do better by public servants. In so many ways.

Most interesting DOGE take I’ve seen yet: www.eatingpolicy.com/p/um-congres... From @pahlkadot.bsky.social

@pahlkadot.bsky.social article below on DOGE is essential reading. It also raises the question of what to try if DOGE fails?

Huge respect for what @pahlkadot.bsky.social has done, and even more for what she tried and failed to accomplish, in actually improving government efficiency. I share the fear and the conflicted hope she articulates so beautifully Bringing Elon to a knife fight www.eatingpolicy.com/p/bringing-e...

Elon’s ambitions should not serve as cover for Dems to abdicate responsibility for thinking seriously about government reform, says @pahlkadot.bsky.social "Let’s not pretend that change was going to come from Democrats if they’d only had another term." www.eatingpolicy.com/p/bringing-e...

Schedule F is NOT civil service reform, @pahlkadot.bsky.social says. There is nothing in there about performance. It just lets you fire people on any basis - including loyalty. Firing low performers and hiring the right ones is the point of the merit system principles.

“A lot of the government tech community… just grabbed a bag of popcorn and are watching in real time as Elon and Vivek learn all the things they’ve known, lived, and absolutely hated for their entire time in public service.” - @pahlkadot.bsky.social www.eatingpolicy.com/p/bringing-e...

This from @pahlkadot.bsky.social is frustratingly amazingly accurate. www.eatingpolicy.com/p/bringing-e...

An excellent and important op-ed by @ArnabDatta321 — very glad to see it in The New York Times. Things are changing. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/08/o...

I'm discussing my recent paper, "State Capacity for Building Infrastructure" next Thursday (12/12) at 3:00pm ET at a webinar hosted hosted by the Niskanen Center, with @pahlkadot.bsky.social and Marshall Kosloff. More on the paper: bsky.app/profile/zlis... www.niskanencenter.org/virtual-even...

New, from @giannella.bsky.social & I: It is very likely that the Trump administration will add administrative burdens to safety net programs. What can state and local govts do? We talk about one simple innovation to increase SNAP take-up. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

This is perhaps the best post-election podcast that I’ve heard so far. Immediately bought @pahlkadot.bsky.social’s book after listening. @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/4C5Z...
