Can a land grab that could easily explode into a global conflict really be all about shares of mineral assets? Is this what we have become? It's about splitting the pie rather than ownership of the pie? With these global values we are all a target.

Just finished this line and wash still life. It’s that stereotypical ‘brick and trout’ subject matter LOL. Wash is watercolour on recycled paper #art

Wouldn't it be great if journalists and politicians used #ValentinesDay to just talk about the people they love and the examples of love in the world. It's just one day and we all need a break

It’s done! An abstracted still life using ballpoint pen, some ink and a little pencil. I quite like the vibrancy

Watching the football at St Andrews and stunned by a grassy pitch … in February … in Division 1 … in England #jumpersforgoalposts

Politicians acting on ‘instinct’ are failing to realise just how many unexpected consequences there are - all over the world. People lose jobs, suppliers lose customers, tax take is never what it seems, some immigrants are vital to us. Politics is actually really hard. Populism is easy

One more session and this ballpoint and ink picture is done. Time to find some ripe bananas to work from

People were hand feeding the birds @rspbengland.bsky.social Ham Wall today and the birds are getting tame as a result. Not clever. There are signs asking people not to but just being ignored

At least some things in the grim world we have right now make me happy. There is a metaphor here

A quick watercolour sketch celebrating the Glasgow Tenement Museum. Well worth a visit and a real tribute to the tenement model which could be configured as swanky apartments or dense communal housing.

It’s funny that the British Nostalgia posts never mention looting during the Blitz, Oswald Mosley, terrible manufacturing quality, awful food and service, football hooligans, devaluation of the currency, child abuse by church and private education, Christian sectarian violence. Aah the good old days

I’m going to have to leave Facebook soon - way too much British Nostalgia far-right nonsense, AI photo junk and not a lot else. It’s a shame. Take away moderation and find out there are no grownups

Having an art-tastic weekend. Today enjoying paintings by the Glasgow Boys and others at Kelvingrove. We have some amazing collections in Britain

Every time I look at this old painting of a Reed Bunting it gives me El Greco vibes #birds #art

I’ve spent some happy hours at the Scottish National Museum of Modern Art today. They have a fascinating exhibition of Everlyn Nicodemus’s work. And the permanent collection is pretty special too

So Chris Philp thinks that British workers need to improve their work ethic. I never understand why wealthy people need financial incentives to work harder but the rest need a stick

We're all a bit bedraggled in Somerset right now.

Tired of hearing "you can't say that any more". Never any indication about who is stopping the saying... and they prove it by then saying it. What you can't do is expect everyone to agree with your TikTok drivel

Just been to see A Complete Unknown. Chalamet may be good, though not Oscar-winning imho, but the star of the show is the guy who inspired the script and wrote the soundtrack - Mr Dylan himself. Couldn’t wait to play some more in the car on the way home #bobdylan #acompleteunknown

Long-tailed tits are probably my favourite garden bird. I really like their noisiness and sociability. You can hear them coming and then they kind of sweep through the garden and go on their way. Don't forget it's the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend #rspb #BigGardenBirdwatch2025 #birds

I like a silhouette. These woodpigeon and jackdaw photos fit the bill for me. Just trying out the new camera #birds

I'm working on something a bit different for me - an abstracted still life and just using pens. I like the textures it's creating and the feeling of venturing into the unknown

Of course you aren't going to #mars but you can siphon a lot of Government money to a "Mars programme" if you know anyone who has a company in the space business

They all do it but doesn't anyone else think that pardoning and preemptive pardoning is a pretty weird imperial/monarchic power? It kind of says your judicial system is broken

I’ll admit I have eaten in a few nice places but this blew me away. FARA in #Glastonbury. It’s a cafe but presentation and flavours were fantastic and the sort of thing I’d expect in a nice restaurant. Beetroot cooked at least three ways, whipped ricotta on sourdough with dill and tasted nuts.

I spent last night drinking cider and playing skittles. I am now fully embracing Somerset

Only small and delicate but I love seeing the first signs of new growth

Good morning from glorious Somerset where the sun is finally shining again and a lovely female Bullfinch visited the garden this morning. Beautiful birds

I think this one is done now. It’s only 28cm x 15.5cm but it’s taken a few hours to get here. Really liking blending colours with pencils and the detail #birds #ducks

This fella has entertained me this morning - cracking birds hoovering up the ants

With all the holding, pushing etc at corners I’d like to see at least one team start their attacking players in an American football three point stance. Absolutely unstoppable but it would look terrible

Just finished reading Chums by @simonkuper.bsky.social It's about the way the Eton/Oxford factory has driven British politics for decades and why it resulted horribly with (amongst other things) Johnson, Truss, and Brexit. Fascinating and outrageous. Excellent read

One of the joys of retirement is not having to worry about getting the year right when signing things in January. To be honest I'm happy these days just to get the day of the week right
