Here is a glimpse of what happens on the other side of the U.S. deportation machine. I spent this last week both inside and outside of the Migrant Reception Center in Guatemala City talking with migrants and their families. Here is my latest story for The El Paso Times.

Last week 27 faith groups filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for reversing the sensitive locations policy. They argued that the policy was in place for 30 years, which lines up with the historic Bowie High School lawsuit against Border Patrol in '92. Here is my story:

🚨 Update: we were able to track down Yesenia, the mother picked up with her 2 kids in Tucson. After a night of interrogation at Border Patrol station, the Venezuelan mother of 4 was deported to Mexico. Her husband and two of her kids remain in US. azluminaria.org/2025/02/16/v...

This Wall Street Journal video about the cost of military deportation flights is one of the wildest things I've seen in a while. It cost $2.8 million—with 2 in-air refuelings!—to deport 104 people to India on February 4. $27,000 per deported person. www.wsj.com/video/analys...

✈️👀Last night. First depotation flight of multiple nationalities from San Diego to Panama on a military plane 09-9210, flight RCH 249. Pres Mulino says 2 more. Below are some of my screen shots of the flight progression. Article below confirming. www.tvn-2.com/nacionales/m...

Guatemalans living abroad sent home $1.817 billion in remittances in January 2025, a increase over the same month the prior year. We will see in the coming months how remittances flows are affected by the policies of the Trump administration. Last year saw a historic amount of remittances.

Tump’s use of military planes to carry out deportations is unprecedented and comes with a hefty price tag. The ICE chartered deportation cost far less and carry more people. My latest for the El Paso Times.

Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo and Secreatart of State Marco Rubio just announced that deportation flights to the Central American country will increase by 40%. Added to this Guate will receive migrants from other countries. Arévalo stated this is not a “third country agreement”

The ironic thing is that this just significantly strengthened every asylum case where Mexicans are seeking protection from the cartels, as it's now the official position of the US that the cartels are working directly with the government.

Un primer vuelo con 34 ciudadanos peruanos deportados desde Estados Unidos llegó durante la madrugada de este sábado a Lima, informa el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Perú.

“I don't feel that it was right that they brought us a plane like that.” A fourth military deportation flight flew out from El Paso on Thursday. On board were 80 Guatemalans. These flights are part of a campaign to dehumanize migrants. My story for The El Paso Times, a friend in Guate helped

As a journalist I sometimes I wish I could cover dinosaur discoveries..

US administrations have spent $14 billion in aid this century on their relationship with #Colombia. Since 2022 that has included 10+ migrant removal flights per month. Now, the relationship may collapse because Colombia said no to using 2 military planes for those flights.

looked this up. the ENTIRE state of alabama has a grand total of 2,569 haitian immigrants. as best i can tell there are no more than 100 haitian immigrants in Guntersville, a town of about 8500

The Diocese of El Paso and county officials have denounced the Trump administration's reversal of policy protecting sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, and churches from ICE's immigration enforcement raids. Here is my latest for the El Paso Times:

I have heard from multiple sources today that lawyers who provide Know Your Rights presentations in ICE detention centers have been kicked out completely. These presentations are sometimes the only way people in detention find out details about the process they’re going through.

Today the Juárez based Messenger Angels Peace Collective held a protest on the Paso del Norte bridge in solidarity with migrants deported from the United States. The action was held as 80 Mexican migrants were deported. Photos by Omar Ornelas for the El Paso Times/USA Today Network

This is a critical report that gives so much context to the reason so many people are seeking to migrate from Ecuador. I have spoken with a number here on the border. Everyone has mentioned the rapid deterioration of security as a reason they were forced to leave.

Mexico has started preparing temporary shelters to receive Mexican nationals deported under Trump's planned mass deportation. The shelter in Juárez is one of nine currently being prepared. My story from the Borderlands:

Multiple UFW union offices received this in the mail this week. Thanks for reaching out!

New! Mexico HAS agreed to accept the Trump administration's Remain in Mexico program. DHS announces that it can resume immediately. The details of the agreement between the two countries remains unclear. Sheinbaum says this is unilateral but that is obviously false. www.dhs.gov/news/2025/01...

Guatemala's corrupt Attorney General did not attend yesterday's inauguration. She was sanctioned by the Biden administration, as well by the European Union for anti-democratic actions and corruption. I guess she wasn't able to get her visa in order in time.

Today's executive action eliminating the CBP One application dashes the hopes accessing asylum of migrants and throws the southern border into chaos. My story from the El Paso del Norte bridge for the El Paso Times.

From CBP One web site. It is over. Future outstanding appointments about 30,000 are being cancelled. People are receiving those email now. This afternoon presentations had been rescheduled to Feb 9 last Friday. Now to be crushed. At least this morning people were allows to present.

Migrants with an appointment at 1pm await to hear if CBP will follow through on their petition interviews. There is frustration growing.

I will continue to post here from the border, but also here is our live coverage from the border Texan border.

Fox's Bill Melugin confirmed this morning that DHS will be directed to immediately suspend the use of the app for migrants seeking appointments at ports of entry. Those who enter this morning will likely be the last for a long time.

Migrant shelters run by religious organizations in Ciudad Juárez are preparing for another crisis. In the past they received migrants who sought to enter the U.S., but now they are preparing for any mass deportations carried out by the Trump administration. Here is my latest

Today I’ll be on the Paso del Norte bridge talking with migrants waiting for their CBP One appointments. Trump threatened during the campaign and following his victory to close the app, which has become the only means to request asylum. (Photo from yesterday morning)

So many migrants have faith and little else. Even after family separation, in 2019 when I was at the border I still heard migrants tell me that God would help Trump and immigration judges understand that they were good people who should be allowed to be in the US in safety.
