DIED THIS DAY: SIR CHARLES LYELL (Nov. 14, 1797 - Feb. 22, 1875). Author of The Geological Evidence of the Antiquity of Man (1863) and Principles of Geology (1830-83) where he argued that the observable geological processes explained geological history.

DIED THIS DAY: MENDEL'S FIRST PAPER. Gregor Mendel’s lectures on his hybridization of pea plants were delivered before the Natural Sciences Society of Brünn on Feb 8 & Mar 8, 1865 where he described his LAWS OF GENETICS. Published in 1866, almost everyone, including Darwin, ignored it until 1900.

Born This Day: Mary Leakey (Feb. 6, 1913 – Dec. 9, 1996). Mary and Louis Leakey worked from 1935 to 1959 at Olduvai Gorge. After her husband died in 1972, Mary continued her work at Olduvai and Laetoli. She discovered Homo fossils at Laetoli including fifteen new species and one new genus.

Born This Day: Alexandre Brongniart (Feb 5, 1770 – Oct 7, 1847) was a French geologist & paleontologist who collaborated with Georges Cuvier on a study of the geology. He first arranged the geologic formations of the Tertiary Period in chronological order and described them.
