Coeur d'Alene is a *nasty* place and has been for at least 50 years.

"On the basis of #fossils preserved under a blanket of ash in the earliest #Permian-aged Wuda Tuff Flora, Inner #Mongolia, #China, we reconstruct a new whole-plant species of marattialean tree fern." 🌿

Economists know it, but politicians rarely say it—globalization massively reduced global inequality. 🧪 #EconSky

“Viruses don’t care about countries and borders. They don’t know they exist. We need to coordinate globally in order to stay on top of what’s happening with the virus and to learn from one another.” From my latest for @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I’ve never doomscrolled through LinkedIn before. It’s heartbreaking to see so many talented #scientists and science managers in the federal government being discarded, we will all pay a price for this, no exceptions…🧪

Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025! Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide! #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

We are now finding bird flu in deer mice and house mice in Washington State. H5N1 is advancing along the evolutionary ladder—affecting birds, mammals, and humans. This is not speculation; it’s a timeline.

Among other things, the California Coastal Commission oversees oil and gas development in state waters.

We don’t need the Russian economy. Make a list of everything in your home made in Russia. Throw out the bottle of Vodka. Could you do without everything else? There’s your answer. Western business returning to Russia does not advance American interests; it makes Putin more powerful.

No doubt last night’s purge reflects racism and misogyny. But those wrongs are just a cover for the far more serious evils and dangers that exist here.

"It is absurd to mindlessly decimate the workforce that has led the world in science over the past 75 years, and to willingly give up excellent scientists and talent," Beyer wrote. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

A post disputed basal mammalimorph Morganucadon in No Am. So, as the co-discoverer of the only known NA tooth with Will Downs of this taxon and 1st E Jur "mammal" from 1 of 4 sacks of matrix hiked out of the Gold Springs Site, Kayenta Fm, Northern AZ. My photo July, 1981. #FossilFriday. Science 1983

As a former scientist, I can confirm this. People make big sacrifices to be researchers — years of school and very low pay. You are usually poor for at least a decade. Also, most science can't be done without expensive equipment. You can't just set up a cancer research lab in your spare bedroom.

Exciting opportunity to oversee, the nation's most dynamic state geological survey. Utah's beloved State Geologist is stepping down, so here is your chance to direct the Utah Geological Survey. www.governmentjobs.com/careers/utah... We need the very best to oversee this exceptional organization.

Thank goodness for the American Medical Association. Here is their YouTube page. Please share far and wide. Right now bird flu is spreading throughout our country and most people have no clue. Please stay updated and bookmark this page for your health and well-being. www.youtube.com/@americanmed...

An interesting paper on a mass mortality bed full of ornithomimids at the base of the Cretaceous. Need to keep collecting in our ankylosaur, iguaunodont, utahraptaurine, and therizinosaur basal Cretaceous bonebeds to follow up on this study. @jlivelypaleo.bsky.social @eutretauranosuchus.bsky.social

NSF funded my grad work with a fellowship and a doctoral dissertation grant. NSF funded the curation of my fossil collection in a museum. NSF funded the IODP expeditions and research for my first post-PhD papers. NSF currently funds me through an early career award. NSF gave my life science.

A nice snail summary.... Lots of undescribed Turritellid species around the margins of the Upper Cretaceous Mancos Sea.

📣 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🔬 I made this short comic to explain what the #NIH cuts mean in practice because behind the abstract label of #overheadcosts are real people, doing important work! #AcademicSky #resist #organize #scicomm

Ways to help instead of doom-scrolling: Do you like making spreadsheets? Create well-referenced database outlining what government does for us. Are you an artist? Use the list to make easy-to-share, well-referenced infographics. Are you a social media wizard? Make an account to share these facts.

Let's checkout a few mesoeusuchian grade terrestrial crocs from the Upper Jurassic (Kimmerigian)and basal Cretaceous (Valanginian) of the Colorado Plateau. The new Yellow Cat croc is twice the size of the 2 Morrison taxa. They filled role of skunks and racoons in mid-Mesozoic landscape.
