My esteem for Pedro Pascal grows ever greater.

Today’s the day… Beer Breaks in Britain is now on the shelves of your local bookshop.

A full-time, open-ended lectureship in Ancient History at Leeds! It's a different department to me but your duties will still include being asked interminable questions about ancient weirdos by me, your colleague with a healthy interest.

Delighted to see the photo of nineteenth-century social reformer Shevantibai Nikambe from my article on the cover of the latest issue of @vpreditors.bsky.social!

Wow, this will be great!

Beer people! I'm on the hunt for proper British-brewed lagers. What do I mean by proper? One, it’s fermented with an actual lager yeast, not ale brewer's house yeast. Two, it’s been lagered for at least 20 days. So, y’know, it's actually a lager. Have some in mind. Just checking if I missed any?

Fascinating stuff…

There's still time to sign up to Dr Jack Quin's talk on the Victorian's fascination with statues! This talk is hybrid so book your tickets to get access to the MS Teams link 🎫 www.tickettailor.com/events/cssahevents/1581279

I ran a knowledge exchange for 30 PhD and EngD students from Bristol in Jan. This is a great write-up by the organisers. Its a valuable format to bring students together to talk about things they often get stuck on like attending conferences, publishing, using labs www.bristol.ac.uk/composites/n...

First sighting of @beerbreaks.bsky.social in the wild. Well, Stanfords. A day early!

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”

Enjoyed presenting some scattered thoughts at the launch of Philip Howell's book 'Pub' (Bloomsbury) - a great pocket paperback exploring the components and relationships that can go into shaping this complex place. A very accessible mix of history, politics, and anecdote.

Universities are major employers. This is a huge blow for the community as a whole, especially somewhere within a large rural area like Bangor.

Good point, this...

Just one little week to go until the launch of Beer Breaks in Britain. Better start queuing at the bookshop. Or come to our first open event in Brighton on March 10 (DM for details). Or you can order online from our publisher, @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social: www.bloomsbury.com/uk/beer-brea...

Today I'm running a retreat for a lovely group of undergraduates from Classics @uobartsmatter.bsky.social to help them focus on their dissertations. So many smiling, eager faces and lots of lovely comments makes my job a real pleasure.

@joparsons.bsky.social one for you?

Are you an indie bottle shop with e-commerce or online beer retailer? How would you feel about being featured as a recommended supplier in national newspaper articles? Could be an ongoing thing - I need to tell lots of people where they can buy a certain beer. Lemme know if interested in featuring.

Sunday afternoon in the intimate tramcar car at The Kings Head, Bristol, where eight conversations overlap. 🍻🍺

I have a (very small) favour to ask of all you wonderful people! I'm doing a talk at the excellent Good Chemistry Brewing taproom. It would really help to get an idea of what people think about alewives (if anything!). Help a gal out by answering these 3 Qs? 💗 🍻 forms.gle/61jKrVhQsdG2...

Excited to be sharing my love for the #bonkbuster with @nccratbournemouth.bsky.social in a couple of weeks. Thanks to @drmllz.bsky.social for inviting me to indulge myself in my favourite subject!

Very interesting. I'm not sure binge drinking is a thing of the past but I hadn't heard about zebra striping or damp drinking and I love both terms!
