In our latest review, we explore 12 deep-learning tools for metagenomic analysis, covering their strengths, limitations, and key applications. We hope it serves as both a resource and inspiration for new ways to analyze metagenomic data. Great work by Eli Levy Karin! ๐Ÿ“„ doi.org/10.1093/nsr/...

The news getting you down? I invite you to stare at this chart of solar and wind deployed capacity in China. They blew past their ambitious 2030 target... last July.

Today, we are publishing the first-ever International AI Safety Report, backed by 30 countries and the OECD, UN, and EU. It summarises the state of the science on AI capabilities and risks, and how to mitigate those risks. ๐Ÿงต Full Report: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/679a0c... 1/21

What limits rubisco function? Is it the chemical mechanism? Evolution? In this paper, @prywes.bsky.social et. al explore this question by assaying >99% of single amino acid mutants in Form II rubisco (1/7) doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Is it just me or is the cover a bit cheeky? This bird's haircut reminds me of someone ...

POSTDOC POSITION AVAILABLE, Geneva, Switzerland - Applications are invited for a postdoc position to study UV-B perception and signalling in plants. Please apply, forward to suitable candidates, and/or repost; many thanks! Deadline February 24, 2025. See www.ulm-lab.ch for more information.

Time to end the vascular plant chauvinism - "Bryophytes...flourish in environments where even the hardiest vascular plant species cannot survive"...the diversity of bryophytes surpasses that of ferns, lycophytes and grasses #botany www.nature.com/articles/s41... #botany ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒพ

Come and join us for the workshop "Plant science in the Anthropocene" (PLANT), March 24th to April 4th 2025 @ University Paris-Saclay. Deadline for applications: Dec 17, 2024 #PlantScience

Did you know #diatoms are motile? These tiny glass cells have no cilia or flagella and a rigid body yet can glide on surfaces using a specialised slit in the cell wall called the raphe! What is the functional morphology of the raphe? All revealed in our new preprint www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Hi Bluesky community! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Are you looking forward to 2025 as much as we are? ๐Ÿ‘€ We just updated our 2025 Annual Poster to include even more events for you to join, so go and have a look! โžก๏ธ s.embl.org/poster-bl #EMBLEvents #molecularbiology #lifesciencetraining

Photosynthesis is a molecular miracle: light becomes energy. Plants are nature's first chemists, crafting food from air and water. Without plants, there's no food chain. Plants fuel the world.

Really sad to see eLife dying bit by bit ๐Ÿ˜” I really hoped it would change โ€œthe systemโ€. My take home:1-academics are incredibly stubborn to change 2-even revolutions need to be pragmatic. You have to stay connected to the realities of the world

Show your gratitude to the amazing @ucsfchimerax.bsky.social team by following them here :) ๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿผ

It was wonderful to have this opportunity! Thank you Disnovation, STARTS EU, @hactebcn.bsky.social @icfonians.bsky.social and to all our group and especially @michal-g.bsky.social for their support! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒŽโ˜€๏ธ

We have quite a range of PhD projects this year, covering cryo-EM methods, bacteriology/bioenergetics, and infection/antibiotics/vaccines. Would really appreciate if people can RT and share with their teams!

Faster and more accurate protein modeling with CryFold. By focusing on nearby points (Local Attention) and employing map masking, CryFold excels in generating models from challenging maps regions. It enables a more cost-efficient model building. ๐Ÿงต ๐Ÿ’พ github.com/SBQ-1999/Cry...

Great post to kickstart on Bsky! Inceptor was a tough one for #Massspec. Together with Sem Tamara we showed, among others, that #inceptor ectodomain binds #insulin and pro-insulin at low pH. Maybe #XL-MS will tell us where? ๐Ÿ™ƒ Thanks @heikolickert.bsky.social for involving us on this milestone :)

Thrilled to share one of our biggest discoveries: โ€œInceptor binds to and directs insulin towards lysosomal degradation in beta cellsโ€. doi.org/10.1038/s422... A tremendous collaborative effort led by JohannaSiehler, Sara Bilekova and other members of the Lickert lab @heikolickert.bsky.social

Sometimes you just have to persevere through negative reviews. Reviewers, please be kind :) #methodsmatter bit.ly/gs2-scholar

Joint labheads? Yesplease! We can't do it all well and we are fools for thinking so. Not saying it doesn't work as is, but imagine how far we could go in a good #collaborative matchup #chemsky #pisky Full paper: www.openread.academy/en/paper/rea...

I took biochem in 2001, and for nearly 20 years read amino acid sequences dailyโ€ฆ and I never knew Dayhoff named them or even the logic behind things like Q until last Friday (h/t Mike Janech). Also, this is another big Dayhoff moment for me. She was incredible! #proteomics #bioinformatics
