Excited for my first visit to @mpi-eva-leipzig.bsky.social and honoured to be part of this incredible group of scholars at this symposium on "What makes us human?" www.eva.mpg.de/events/2025-...

As someone who was involved in some of the discussions around this mess, it is as bad as it sounds, maybe even worse. Wiley has gone PCI-hostile based on completely incoherent arguments.

If Wiley is PCI-hostile, I am now Wiley-hostile. No more reviewing/publishing with them from me.

NEW: Statement from the PCI RR Managing Board on the withdrawal of Infant and Child Development as a PCI RR-friendly journal, and the decision by Wiley to refuse preprints that have been peer-reviewed by @peercommunityin.bsky.social / @pci-regreports.bsky.social Read here ➡️ osf.io/tn8mh

Great news - imo transparent peer review is one of the simplest ways of improving science

Springer-Nature launched a series of "Discover" journals that closely mimic MDPI titles -- sharing *identical* journal names, and likely similar business model. What is going on, and why researcher will - as always - fall for it? A 🧵 the-strain-on-scientific-publishing.github.io/website/post...

Another Ivy League psychology professor just lent his credentials to an organisation which promotes scientific racism. Don’t think psychology’s biggest problem has anything to do with p values

Related: it seems like Brockman represents many public intellectuals who are/were respected (Pinker, Dawkins, Kahneman, Ito, Eno, etc.). But after learning all the Epstein stuff I won't go there (newrepublic.com/article/1548...; open.spotify.com/episode/6QcF...). So, who is the ethical alternative?

I also really enjoyed @manvir.bsky.social 's book! If you like it, it helps if you can leave a review (Amazon, Audible, etc.). Here's mine:

Crazy to me to see this kind of blatant victim-blaming of women in abusive relationships with alcoholics in a 2025 hit song

@psych.peercommunityin.org is open for submissions! (Nice to see our @yutoozaki.bsky.social et al. @manyvoices.bsky.social work cited as an example of the flexible publishing options you can get with @peercommunityin.bsky.social !)

PCI Psychology is here!! 🎉🥳 After over a year of hard work by so many people, we are thrilled to announce that we are open for submissions! Join us in making publishing more efficient, equitable, and open: psych.peercommunityin.org #PsychSciSky #scipub

7.5 years after signing the contract, I finally submitted the full manuscript of my book to Oxford University Press!!! Thanks to Keio's Fukuzawa Fund, it will be published open access. You can already read the submitted version as a preprint at osf.io/b36fm I hope you all find it useful!

I'd really appreciate recommendations for good agents for a non-fiction popular audiobook proposal, titled "MANY VOICES: How the world's music brings us together when words fail". We had one lined up but he became unavailable. Comments, DMs, or email ([email protected]) all good!

The reunion of my college a cappella group was really special. Singing with the Zumbyes made me want to study the power of music to bring people together. Singing together last week made it clear that power still connects us two decades later! 🎶 🥰 www.boneconnector.com/writings/spi...

Big cities are vibrant hubs of culture, but why exactly is that? Now out in @natcomms.nature.com, we analysed music listening patterns of over 2.5 million people and demographics to examine mechanisms driving cultural diversity. With @researchdeezer.bsky.social @norijacoby.bsky.social Highlights ⬇

The two musical Patrick Savages have finally followed one another! 🧍🐛 🎶🌎🧪

Glad my turn to lead journal club discussion of social media science debates was delayed till June 13 - looks like even more drama in a field characterized by it.

“Research assistants, local collaborators & community partners, esp those from the Global South, are often seen as data collectors rather than co-creators of knowledge” A great piece on inclusive authorship & the need for flexibility @lseimpactblog.bsky.social blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsoci...

Two new music papers by @dorshilton.bsky.social et al. (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...) and by Steingo & Ghazanfar (doi.org/10.1177/2059...). Together with @manvir.bsky.social and Hill's recent paper (doi.org/10.1016/j.cu...), an interesting (partial) push back against musical universals...

Just updated a near-final draft of my book. In addition to minor tweaks, it now includes full forewords from Psyche Loui (SMPC President) and Svanibor Pettan (ICTMD Past President). Should be submitting to the publisher within ~2 weeks, so still time to suggest final changes! osf.io/preprints/ps...

Want $30 and able to come to the University of Auckland Science Building (23 Symonds St) tomorrow (May 22) 1:30-2:30pm? We need a few more participants for a fun in-person singing/speaking experiment. See attached flyer for more details (including contact email: [email protected])

Cato has published my comprehensive review of the ~240 Venezuelans the US government renditioned 2 months ago to Salvador’s notorious prison. We identified FIFTY who came legally, never violated any immigration law, but are imprisoned at the US government’s request and at US taxpayer expense.

This morning I attended my reo Māori class and spent a couple hours working on my lecture content. Tomorrow I collect pilot data for my Māori study This weekend I honour my tūpuna at my Māori graduation ceremony They can never take our māoritanga away from us. Ka whawhai tonu tātou AKE AKE AKE

Just posted an updated preprint of my book (doi.org/10.31234/osf...). It includes this latest version of contrasting visualisations of human evolution after help from @chrisbstringer.bsky.social updating his previous version. More feedback welcome!
