Thrilled to welcome Dr. Kisha Braithwaite to @brownpublichealth.bsky.social today to discuss her latest book Black Women and Resilience: Power Perseverance, and Public Health. Such a timely lecture!

Had my first participant study visit today for my diss and it went so well! It’s the small wins! 🥳🥳

At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:

The continued obsession with ivermectin largely from conservatives is concerning but also fascinating. Of all things to remain unwaveringly committed to related to health, it’s this? A case study in how disinformation can really take hold and distort perception and beliefs.

The Stonewall Inn released a response to the National Parks Service removing the word transgender from the park outside of the Inn. A great reminder that we have to look after each other

#academicsky what do we think the changes and cuts at #nih mean for f31 diversity fellowships that are currently funded?

NIH has cut billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

I'm currently on day two of a workshop from the NIH. We're in the middle of a presentation and we're now being told that the remainder of the workshop is cancelled. 🙃

Been attending a dissertation writing retreat this week. Can’t say enough how important and useful a supportive work environment is to writing for 6 hours a day! Learning lots of tips and tricks to keep the word going to come out in the end with a fully drafted study 1!

I wish more journals distributed manuscripts for review with page and line numbers. It’s the least that could be done to ease the reviewer burden. And as an author, it’s so useful when the reviewer’s comments are linked to a specific section of my manuscript. Why isn’t this standard practice? 🤔

New SZA album on Friday is pushing me through toward the end of this week. Just one final left

Sick with maybe the flu? But flu levels are low. Hm. I’m watching yellow jackets. Any show recommendations?

The good vibes worked. I received a full pass and am officially a PhD candidate @brownpublichealth.bsky.social! Very excited to undertake this work to understand the health impacts of xylazine with the support of community & my committee! 🤓

Just got off the phone with the dentists office and the receptionist ended the call with “have a good weekend”. Love that energy on a Monday afternoon

Okay I made a starter pack of trans and non-binary writers/journalists! Please share, and comment on this is you'd like to be added. I'm an editor at Xtra, an LGBTQ2S+ publication, and I'd love to be connected to more trans media workers here. go.bsky.app/3mWT6w2

I am SICK of reps like Nancy Mace who make it their entire mission to target trans ppl with absolute nonsense bills. Ppl should be able to use whatever bathroom they need to when they gotta go! Can we plz focus on actual issues facing this country! And where are the Dems who will stand w/ Sarah?!

Umm what the hell is this on Instagram? An AI “therapist”?! We need congress to regulate the use of AI NOW! There are million things I could say about how insanely irresponsible this is that I don’t even know where to begin! #medsky #publichealth #clinicalpsych

Thought to myself this morning that I am so tense and should get back into yoga. Then mid day a friend texted that he had extra passes for a class tonight. 🧘🏻‍♂️ needed that, especially after this Monday that had a crazy amount of Monday energy to it

Where are my fellow substance use & harm reduction researchers? 👀👀 anyone know of any starter packs?

I honestly don’t think Americans understand how much their day to day lives depend on federal civil servants and now is the time for professional commentators to write op-eds explaining

daily reminder to support your local library, even if that’s just by checking out ebooks! 📚

I’m a PhD student 1st authoring more & more frequently and I find that I can get tripped up on the cover letter. Wondering if any of my senior academics have tips on prepping a succinct and compelling CL to capture interest of the editor? 📝✍🏻🤔 #academicsky #publichealth #writing

I love how this app is logically evolving to meet the needs of its users. Really makes you think about the networking potential that can come from this, especially for conferences!

Post a picture you took (no description) to bring some zen to the timeline

Might be a good time to read up on the history of science & how it's fundamentally a social process (as it is carried out by humans) & how it's deeply intertwined with power relations. Decades of literature! Will be super helpful when having (yet another) debate about science and politics! 🧪⚕️🛟

Friendly neighborhood political scientist here to remind you that everything is political, including and sometimes especially science. In fact, claiming your vocation is apolitical is itself a political claim with a political goal.

#AcademicSky intros! Quote w/ 1) a project ur working on & 2) an odd idea/theory u aren’t working on but keep thinking about 1) building an EHR based computational phenotype to detect #xylazine exposure 2) scientific communication training should be required in #publichealth PhD programs
