The entrance to the Anglo-Saxon crypt of St. Wystan’s Church at Repton in Derbyshire. Dating to the 8th century, the crypt served as a royal mausoleum for two Mercian kings, as well as the resting place of St. Wystan. 📸 My own. #SaxonSunday #AngloSaxon #Repton #Derbyshire

I see Wimbledon have replaced line judges with robots, yet they still ignore my suggestion to replace all the ball boys and ball girls with a single Jack Russell terrier.

Horrific Sexual Violence Used Against #Tigray’s Women For two years, Tseneat carried her rape inside her — not as a memory or metaphor, but a set of physical objects: eight rusted screws, a pair of nail clippers, a handwritten note wrapped in plastic. 1/ www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

The best phrase about hot weather I’ve come across in Afrikaans is die hond die kat jaag, maar beide loop. It means “the dog is chasing the cat, but both are walking”

I simply don't buy this. There have been plenty of errors, but you've had some fairly effective foreign policy in very challenging circumstances and a major reform programme moving (PIP reform aside) relatively smoothly through the Commons. Compare to, say, Truss/Johnson/Sunak or, indeed, Thatcher

One from 2015, when we’d just started a family and Glastonbury was suddenly impossible. #glastonbury #comic

Some violets painted in 1484 by Luca Signorelli.

After surveying all the evidence, and applying widely accepted principles of medical ethics, we found that medical transition for minors is not empirically or ethically justified.

This new report may shock some people, but not me. I had to sit by while 2 school librarians, both involved in the Carnegies, one still prominent on Bluesky, agreed on X that they wouldn't shelve my award-winning books for children because of my gender critical views. sex-matters.org/posts/public...

As headlines remain focused on Iran and Israel, Russia escalates its genocidal war—targeting apartment buildings, hospitals, schools, and shelters. Despite much of the media moving on, the attacks are intensifying and growing more brazen by the day.

The USAID calamity is only just beginning

We're saddened to hear about the fire at Medlock Mill, the only known mill in England with surviving evidence of steam-assisted water power. A rare piece of history at the heart of Manchester's role in the Industrial Revolution. CBA & SAVE had called for it to be listed 📷 Manchester Evening News

Horrifying reports abound about sexual violence, including the mass rapes of children. In an act of genocide, RSF rebels are said to taunt minority group women in Darfur that they will be forced to bear Arab children. Few around the world pay attention. www.joxleywrites.jmoxley.co.uk/p/the-war-yo...

I had hoped the awful #KateShemirani had disappeared from our news, but no. She's back, spouting more unscientific nonsense. Pseudo-medicine is deadly. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Broadcast Kneecap from Glastonbury, but voiced by an actor

Ah the Wallace collection

Still true: *Britain is a success story *Most of its cities are doing astonishingly well *Multiculturalism is popular *Mass immigration has not led to social disintegration *Nostalgia is increasingly weird *Britain is incredibly safe *Levels of social cohesion are high Don't let them gaslight you.

Thanks again to Facebook memories for reminding of the day the designer at Ford, who loved Roland Rat, got his own way

Pumped for this new mismatched crime-fighting duo.

Farage and the far right in general come from a grievance culture. If you do what they want, even maximally – Brexit – they’ll move the goalposts and keep moaning. If you engage seriously with their concerns, they’ll find new ones. You will never satisfy them, because they don’t want to be satisfied

#OtD 19 Jun 1843 a crowd of around 4500 "Rebecca" rioters with blackened faces and dressed as women gathered and attacked the Carmarthen workhouse in Wales, and set about destroying it. It took the arrival of a unit of the British army to disperse them stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/9110...

The small Hopwood Hall Chapel in Middleton, Greater Manchester (1964-65) shares an architect and design features with its more famous counterpart, Liverpool Met Catheral. Here the centralised sanctuary is lit by a spectacular lantern of concrete and coloured glass. 2001: A Space Odyssey, anyone?

“Mercurial” – such a useful word when you can’t say “dickhead” on air.

hottest day of the year

One of the stark things in this interview - and which I hope has changed in the past 20 years - is that no one asked about HIM. It was all about her. This made me cry a bit. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Women who stand up for women are such a puzzle and they make him cross.

“Be sure to set me to ‘delicate,’ Alison. It’d be a shame to ruin that sweater, you know, in case it ever comes back in style.”

"To our untrained eye, a corn field looks more 'natural' than an array of solar panels. But a corn field is a biological desert ... Put up some solar panels, and add some plants that only need to be mowed once a year or so (sometimes with sheep) and you see an explosion of life."

Lord Frost really does look out of place in a suit doesn’t he, he’d look much better in a wig and behind a bench in some 1820s law court, quaffing a pint of Madeira while sending a luckless local peasant to Tasmania for life for an incident with a rabbit on the squire’s land.

Up there with the all-time greats. Some days, I think he's the best painter of them all.

“… the “doll” definition of woman supports the idea that there is nothing on the inside — that to transition to being a woman is to become hollowed-out, passive, superficial, brainless.. a direct assault on the idea that women are fully-fledged, thinking, feeling human beings…”

Here I am stuck in the CoOp with you

This comes from engagement work with teenage girls in a park in York. And you see all those things with two dots by them. Those make up 90%+ of what we currently provide for young people in public space. Whereas the things that girls want - they just aren't there. Let's do better.

'Not all were so lucky. I still think about a local dressmaker I went to. One day she was simply gone. Her mother confided to mine that she had died after a backstreet abortion.' Diane Munday #FiLiA2025 will be hosting a session on #abortion #TimeToAct www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle...

Imo, this is really appalling and public safety in both the UK and Brazil would be enhanced by just extraditing this guy

💔 The number of injured in Kyiv due to massive attack has increased to 139. There are also 15 known deaths.

I’m convinced this is how a bay leaf would talk

Doping in sports gives a 4-10% unfair advantage. Because of this, athletes have to undergo blood tests and pee with somebody watching them. All this is accepted as normal. Men have a 20-50% advantage on women in sports. Yet a simple cheek swap to determine sex is cruel and barbaric?

Russia was kicked out of the G8 in March 2014 exactly BECAUSE it launched its war in Ukraine by invading and forcibly annexing Crimea.
