Wowsers!

Water companies’ pollution incidents in England increased by 30% in 2024. Customer bills hiked. Shareholders extracted £1.2bn in 2023-24. Industry controlled by organisations with criminal records. No director prosecuted. Nothing will change until profit motive is removed. Nationalise.

🚨🚨 WOW: UK is prepared to retain some regulatory alignment with the EU and accept #CJEU supervision over a deal to cut checks on imports of foods & agricultural products- in a significant a move on the promised EU-UK #reset five years after #Brexit.🧵 www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Jeff Bezos has more money than any human could spend - and he’s wasting it on planet-wrecking joy rides to space while people on earth starve. Why don’t we just tax the super-rich and use that money to fix wealth inequality AND the climate crisis?

As in vocabulary, also ideology. "Clichés that now emanate from the civil service are identical to those issued in the name of the Conservative government, with a promise to “slash red tape” here and “unlock growth” there." www.economist.com/britain/2025...

If you want a pristine example of how absolutely everything in this country is distorted by the perceived need to perform for right wing voters, look no further than the question of permission to work for asylum seekers

This is what they call a historic turning point “The independent forecaster Frontier Economics reckons that the impact of US tariffs will shrink UK GDP by 0.7%, while a deeper deal with the EU could instead lift GDP by 1.5%, despite US tariffs” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

"You might think that private school leaders...will now be written off as the unreliable fearmongers they appear to be. Don’t bank on it. That they were given so much credence for so long shows where power and influence lies in our broken political and media world." 👏 @benkentish.bsky.social

Seems like a good day to remind everyone that Auschwitz — a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps — was not located in Nazi Germany either.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind. An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one." The other said, "Take him anyway." So they did.

This article is right in everything it says - but there’s something it’s missing - we need to Break the Link between the price of gas and the price of green energy - until we do that no amount of green energy can bring our bills down. 1/2

A private equity firm just bought £1.6 BILLION worth of the NHS. It will make bigger profits by hiking rents for hospitals and NHS facilities. Previous govts privatized the estate. That means less money for frontline healthcare. NHS already drained by PFI and private contractors.

More in No, Other People: New poll: “America would be better off if more people worked in manufacturing.” • 80% of Americans agree • 20% disagree “I would be better off if I worked in a factory.” • 25% of Americans agree • 73% disagree • 2% currently work in a factory

Hi folks, here’s the list of the 100 albums that have made the #5albums70sfinal Voting will commence on Friday 2nd May which gives you 3 weeks to hone your 5 picks from a list of the decades best. It’s a tough ask, but I’m sure you can do it 😉 See you then and good luck…

One thing that intrigues me with this line of thinking is how few political strategists seem to understand that just because the contest is ostensibly x vs y, it is perfectly possible for x to lose the seat without losing many votes directly to y (and could have kept the seat by appealing to z).

Scandalous Every year thousands of UK workers are denied minimum wage. 2016 - 2023: Over 3m workers robbed of the minimum wage. 2007 - 2023: Only 21 employers prosecuted for underpaying the minimum wage, puny fines. NO criminal prosecutions. Lack of prosecutions emboldens more to game the system

This is absolutely nuts!

“These demands to remove & restrict books are not the result of any grassroots or popular sentiment…The majority are now originating from well-funded, organised groups and movements…” Sounds familiar to anyone who’s been dragged into UK culture wars too. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/a...

It’s hard to think of anything he’s done in his second term that’s *not* impeachable.

“.. Furniture producers in China have seen a complete halt in orders from U.S. importers, and we’re hearing the same across toys, apparel, footwear, and sports equipment. .. Almost everything is on hold as it relates to China business.” @loriannlarocco.bsky.social www.cnbc.com/2025/04/12/t...

“Starmer constantly talks up prospects of a trade deal with America, but refuses to contemplate anything of the sort with the EU,” notes Pecksniff in his diary. He also thinks we are sleepwalking into a right-wing revolution. More here ⤵️ @eastangliabylines.co.uk @pecksniffsdiary.bsky.social

Coventry, Derby, Telford, just 3 of the hardest hit areas of the U.K. because of Trump’s tariffs. Our modelling shows these areas would be among those that benefit MOST from goods alignment with the EU.

BE NOT AFRAID

Great article, and for Democrats, read Labour in the UK. I wish they operated more from the heart rather than triangulating all the time.

Matt Hancock intervened personally to help a pizza firm, owned by a Conservative donor, win a lucrative Covid PPE contract. Two days before winning the deal, the company, which had no previous experience of supplying medical equipment, removed ‘pizza’ from its name bylinetimes.com/2025/04/11/m...

It's insanely brilliant how Ukraine just says "fuck it, we'll fix it ourselves" to every problem they come up against. Incredibly inspiring country of people.

🚨NOTE TO ALL MEDIA🚨 Trump did not ‘reverse’ tariffs. He did not ‘pause’ tariffs. He did not ‘climb down’ on tariffs. HE. INCREASED. TARIFFS. OVERALL. (📸 Washington Post)

Wow. This is 🔥🔥 Trump & his Cabinet should be strapped to their chairs and made to watch this on a loop. Victor Gao: “China has been here for 5000 years. Most of the time, there was no United States and we survived.” 🇨🇳 He beautifully trashes JD Vance too. (🎥 Channel 4 News)

Six out of every seven children in the UK's most deprived areas living in poverty. Result of political choices - low wages, austerity, unchecked profiteering, benefit cuts, inequitable distribution of wealth. Future blighted. Govts listen to donors/rich, ignore the rest.

The truth has become basic. Trump is a fool who is fucking everything up. There's no more to it than that. But there's only so many times you can write that column. So people are forced to construct 'well actually he has a point' arguments and 'hidden strategy' think pieces.
