On climate protest, a superb point from @richarddenniss.bsky.social. If protest wasn't effective, govts wouldn't try to ban it. And as much as politicians like to talk about parliamentary logjams, as soon as fossil capital is threatened, they mobilise with extraordinary rapidity and efficacy.

Using North African countries to produce renewable energy for the European market, and stopping them decarbonising their own societies, is neo-colonialism High-income countries must cut their own wasteful consumption and build renewables close to home, not outsource environmental or social harm

Prof Dominick Spracklen just explained on @channel4news.bsky.social how reintroducing 167 wolves in the Scottish Highlands could reduce red deer population enough to boost woodland regeneration, leading to 1 million tons of CO2 sequestred per year. 🤞 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Anyone who uses the term 'DEI' in British politics is clearly importing their culture war labels from America. 'EDI' is the much more common version here in my experience. Going to start my campaign for British language for British culture wars.

Imagine a world without music, a hospital without nurses and Wales without HE language courses. Yep.

Just over a week!

Just published: The new edition of my newsletter for journalists (and anyone else) interested in biodiversity, the ecological crisis and nature-based solutions to climate change. It has news, resources, jobs, great stories, and more. 🌏🧪 thenaturebeat.substack.com/p/nature-bea...

[new paper] EuPPollNet: A European Database of Plant-Pollinator Networks onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Another wonderful paper of @joseblanuza.bsky.social making open more than >1500 networks and looking at their properties. Come for the data, stay for the cool figures!

Two weeks to go! Please do get in touch with me for any question (I'm easy to find online, QUB profile is up) and apply with QUARTILE DTP following these guidelines: quartiles-dla.ac.uk/how-to-apply/

Blocks of spruce plantations flattened by Storm Éowyn are hindering efforts to restore power in many places & causing huge envir damage. In response, Ireland must do more to transition to continuous cover forest management methods. This weeks column ... www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/ou...

Deadline approaching!

PhD alert! Come work with me, @deonroos.bsky.social and Lorraine Scott to develop & apply geoprofiling to identify breeding sites for mobile species of conservation importance, using citizen-science data & field surveys in a #trait based approach. Great post by @xaviermorin.bsky.social and colleagues (in French): is it smart to cut forests to save them from climate change? (ie cutting "maladapted" forests to re-plant with climate resilient ones).

Interesting updates from Ben Bolker on modelling approaches (see paper) In sum: - Doing hypothesis testing or measuring the strength of effects? Then you can use your fullest, maximal model w/ all covariates* ✅ - Doing prediction? Then carry on w/ AIC model selection & averaging ✅ *wisely chosen!

This looks like a great option when nondestructive biomass measurements are required, e.g., in mesocosm experiments.

✨WHEEZING✨

Fellow #trait ecologists, has biotic homogenisation lost its shine as an all-encompassing concept? Haven't seen it mentioned much recently 🤔🌍

Oyez oyez, hear hear, follow @matthiastschumi.bsky.social if you want to know more about the link between bird movement and ecosystem functions. 🌍🕊️

We are the laughing stock of the world. Why is it obvious to all but the USA?

They’ll move left once in office! Any day now, right?

Well done humanity. For it is us who have caused this rapid warming of the planet, and the devastating consequences for people and ecosystems that are so visible today and every day. theconversation.com/my-new-dark-...

Ooh I loved this show!

On this day in 1983, Fraggle Rock debuted. Created by Jim Henson, it was co-produced by CBC and filmed at their Toronto studios. The cast, puppeteers, writers and crew were pretty much all Canadian too! Let's learn more about this wonderful show :) 🧵1/18

IG commonsearth account is full of excellent montages showing the essential link between the ecological crisis and capitalism. I use some of them in my lectures. Do you know them @profjohnbarry.bsky.social ?

I’ve grown wary of using metrics of functional diversity and rarity to guide conservation planning. In this paper I explain why, and discuss three promising approaches for accounting for functionality in the identification of global conservation priorities. (1/7) 🌐

Fact-checking wasn’t “biased” against conservatives. Conservatives just shared more false content. If there’s a sportsball game and one team fouls four times as much, it’s not “biased” for the ref to call four times as many fouls against that team.

The most comprehensive scientific article I’ve read on the climate impact of beef. #climatesky #greensky #climatechange
