Walter Crane's "A Garland for May Day" (1895)

@moviessilently.bsky.social I found this recently while researching a different topic and found it fascinating: an account of a silent movie showing in Tangier in 1900. The Moroccans in the audience well-behaved; the Europeans less so (Al Moghreb Al-Akka, 23 June 1900).

I mean, you could always check the UK government-run website for the actually existing British Antarctic Territory, which was formally claimed in 1908 and literally includes the South Pole... 🙃 www.britishantarcticterritory.org.uk

This is like when the Telegraph review of my book pitched a hissy fit when I said the Falklands War was colonial. What does the Telegraph think “colonial” means, if not exploration and, well, colonies??? www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/04...

Looking forward to the Bristol Radical History Festival this weekend! www.brh.org.uk/site/event-s...

@david-j-barry.bsky.social Hi, are you by any chance the Dave Barry that contacted me through my website? If so, there was a glitch in the form and it didn't collect your email address.

Why does it always have to be personal? Why can’t it be on principle? Equal rights, freedoms, and dignity for all, especially the most oppressed and minoritised.

Pennies are essentially worthless. But if I stole 7 billion of them from Mark Zuckerberg, I think he’d call that theft. If your business model doesn’t work without breaking the law, you’re not in busiess — you’re in organized crime.

again and again and yet again the privileged’s fantasies of oppression take precedence over the marginalised’s real, daily, violent oppression

The media background to today's shameful ruling - a sustained campaign of hostility and misinformation against a minority, across the UK press, aimed squarely at rolling back people's rights. I'm a straight cis man but I remember how the media treated gay people in the 80s, the same hateful shit

The law determines what is legal. It does not determine what is true; what is just; what is morally and ethically sound and defensible. The history of law is the history of the legal system being wrong on these grounds. Trans women are women.

I wrote a thing about why Antarctica attracts so many conspiracy theories, which was a lot of fun to research. 🇦🇶👽 www.swoop-antarctica.com/blog/why-doe...

This is an absolutely terrific piece of writing by @swordsjew.bsky.social ⤵️

It takes an almost impressive level of cognitive malfunction to think of Grozny, Sarajevo, Aleppo, and Mariupol as war crimes while considering this legitimate warfare.

Imagine being on his side and thinking you’re the good guys.

Ironically, LP lost the plot just as the internet is becoming unusable for trip planning because it's so full of slop -- so now there's again a real need for guides that cover practicalities and logistics, with vouched-for, non-sponcon recommendations. MOON guides have stayed the course, tho!
