There is little ideological calculation across the whole of the political centre. John Bright once decried empire as outdoor relief for the aristocracy. Likewise, you should always view the politics of the centre through the prism of short-term career prospects, as @philbc3.bsky.social pointed out.

Ethnically homogenous territories aren't real. They're an illusion conjured by the limitations of maps. You zoom in to any place and the complexity overwhelms. The only places that come close are the ones where states have used violence to *try and make reality conform to the map*.
