The truth sidelined. Journalists bullied. News faked. It’s time to stop the billionaires using media organisations as their own personal playground.

Quote of the day from @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social via this afternoon’s Politics@Lunch newsletter Free sign-up: www.politics.co.uk/subscribe/

If you honestly think ‘censorship’ is the biggest current threat to democracy then you may be in hock to the… checks notes… Tax dodging, regulation hating, union busting, narcissistic social media billionaires who helped win you an election.

Nigel Farage and Reform aren’t on the side of working people – they’re on the side of bad bosses, zero hours contracts and fire and rehire. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

We were back on the picket line at Livv Housing this morning with our general secretary @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social , Knowsley MP @anneliesemidgleymp.bsky.social and importantly, @knowsleyunison.bsky.social and @unitenorthwest.bsky.social members The support is growing and will until they win✊

Love seeing the Daily Mirror on the picket line this morning on the eve of #HeartUnions week. Thanks to @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social, @anneliesemidgleymp.bsky.social and solidarity with striking workers. @mirror.co.uk @politics.mirror.co.uk #RealBritain www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

@the-tuc.bsky.social GS @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social slams Farage as 'political fraud' who must be exposed as an ‘NHS-Privatising Putin Apologist’ bylinetimes.com/2025/02/05/n...

The best way of ensuring Reform don’t make inroads at the next election is for the government to deliver on the manifesto which secured a massive majority last July. Rising living standards, better public services, new rights at work & a growing economy. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The extreme hoarding of wealth is sociopathic. Example below. It amazes me that people can argue the toss that hospital cleaners shouldn’t get sick pay from day one, and argue just as vehemently that the super rich shouldn’t be asked to pay their fair share of tax.

Weirdly James Dyson is less scathing about the impact on the UK economy of those who choose to offshore manufacturing jobs and relocate their head offices to the far east. 🤔🤷‍♂️

As we mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz & the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia past we recommit to challenge hatred in all its forms & the need to build a peaceful world rooted in compassion, understanding and justice. www.tuc.org.uk/blogs/holoca...

📳 NEW EPISODE 📳 How should Britain handle Trump’s politics of chaos? Guest @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social (General Secretary of @the-tuc.bsky.social) on the Employment Rights Bill. And should Judge Dredd defund the police…? We talk to writer @robwilliams71.bsky.social 📳 Listen linktr.ee/ohgodwhatnow...

Public school boys like Farage love to pass off their casual racism and misogyny as just a bit of ‘bants’. In every golf club, pub, office & boardroom, theres always a tedious boor who demands the right to be offensive. www.theguardian.com/law/2025/jan...

The @the-tuc.bsky.social welcomes reports of a ceasefire deal including the release of hostages. After 15 devastating months we need the international community to provide urgent aid to the people of Gaza and to help secure a lasting peace. 1/2

If one in six workers are skipping meals because of a lack of cash, there is something fundamentally wrong with our economy. And it’s why it is vital the government delivers its plans to make work pay, in full. www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

🚨 Non-work thought… After decades of missed opportunities, poor governance & underperformance let’s hope new owners, manager & stadium put us on the road back to challenging for silverware. Tbh I’d take some half decent footie and the odd goal for starters. COYB www.evertonfc.com/news/2025/ja...

The grifters who urged voters to ‘take back control’ are taking thousands from a toxic billionaire who is allegedly war-gaming how to undermine a democratically elected British PM. Chancers.

Rest easy Telegraph readers. I know this will come as a disappointment to many, but - spoiler alert - Britain is not under union control 😂😂 However, the leader of the opposition is definitely taking her talking points from the world’s most unhinged billionaire.

Mick has done a brilliant job leading the @RMTunion through some massive industrial struggles. And he’s been an incredibly effective, recognisable and articulate champion of working people more broadly. A big miss, but he well deserves a very long & happy retirement! 👏🏼👏🏼✊✊

Shopping voucher scheme used by Civil Service - and thousands of other employers - fuelling ‘luxurious’ lives according to Taxpayers Alliance. More luxurious than TPA chair, asset manager Rory McGregor? Or TPA’s top funders? Maybe they should publish a list so we can check? 🤔🙄

Beware of Billionaires bearing gifts this Christmas… Behind the bonhomie & blokey man of the people cos-play is a a straight up agenda of deregulation, privatisation & tax cuts for the rich.

The best present the government could give working people this Christmas is the delivery of the Employment Rights Bill, in full.

Who do you think would benefit most from a flat tax rate? 🤔

My 2024 lowlights… Tax-dodgers cosplaying as farmers. Public school boys saying they’ll stand up for hard working Brits…then voting against improvements to workers rights. ‘Entrepreneurs’ defending their right to unfairly dismiss people.

Lee Anderson fought in the Battle of the Somme apparently. I mean, I know he’d like to go back to a time before women had the vote but this seems a stretch even for him.

Privilege to join @nujofficial.bsky.social members for the first journalists’ strike at @theguardian.com in over 50 years. Time for management to seriously listen and engage with their staff about the future of the @observeruk.bsky.social

Great to be in a packed Council Chamber at the @the-tuc.bsky.social to develop and shape our work on tackling racial injustice and fighting the far-right.

I am sure Elon Musk’s mooted $100m donation to Nigel Farage’s Reform is entirely motivated by his deep love and concern for the British people. *gif instantly dates me 😜

Time for Livv Housing to do the right thing and sit down round the table with Unison and Unite to reach a fair settlement. The fact that more and more staff are joining both unions every week says it all.

Today we show workplace solidarity with the horrendous situation in Gaza. Thousands of Palestinians, mainly women & children, have been killed by Israeli military operations. Many more injured. We need immediate, permanent ceasefire, end to the humanitarian crisis and respect for international law.

Enjoyed this chat yesterday with Steph McGovern and Robert Peston. We talked workers’ rights, the Budget, supporting people back into work and robot football players (didn’t spend too much time on the last issue…) lnk.to/TheRestIsMoney

Good to host @bankofengland.bsky.social governor Andrew Bailey at Congress House today. We shared with him union views on the importance of higher pay and secure work for boosting living standards and growth.

For far too many people, work doesn't pay. The Employment Rights Bill is a win for workers, a win for employers, and good for the UK economy overall. - @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social giving evidence at today's committee hearings for the Bill.

Good for workers. Good for decent employers. Good for the 🇬🇧 economy. The government’s plan to make work pay could boost the economy by more than £13bn. www.tuc.org.uk/news/workers...

A gentle reminder that some of the voices raising concerns about the Budget, hailed the Truss/Kwarteng mini-Budget as a ‘turning point’ and a ‘flying start’. We all want successful, profitable companies, but they need to go hand in hand with decent wages & better public services.

‘I care about working people so much I’d be happy to see a great British brand employing thousands of 🇬🇧 workers go bust because their adverts upset my sensibilities.’ #Fraud

A government trying to level the playing field & repair our public services… Or the defenders of the status quo who have nothing to lose but their tax breaks? I know whose side I’m on.

Sad start to morning hearing about the passing of John Prescott. A lifelong trade unionist, huge Labour movement figure, innovator & radical thinker - from climate change to devolution he pushed our movement to think bigger. Condolences from the TUC to his family & friends.

The last government left: 3 million children in working households in poverty Stagnant wages Public services ravaged by neglect & austerity. But you’re angry because a Labour government wants to end tax breaks for Clarkson & Dyson? www.tuc.org.uk/blogs/sharp-...

Headline translation: Multi-millionaire who bought farm to take advantage of tax break, upset he will lose tax break. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The same newspapers who scream increases in the NMW will damage the economy, are happy to go to the barricades for a tax break for Clarkson, Dyson & friends.

Brilliant day yesterday in Liverpool (it always is!) Met with @gmbunion.bsky.social hospital workers striking for fair pay, @unisontheunion.bsky.social reps in Liverpool Council working hard to secure jobs & conditions & then brilliant politics & business students at Liverpool Community College
