I got a chance to see two of my favorite drummers live last weekend: Jeff "Tain" Watts and Rudy Royston. The most surprising thing to me is how quietly both of them played, especially Mr Watts.

incredible interview with late, great Ron Miles: yellowscene.com/2020/10/29/s... So much wisdom in the closing paragraph.

A chorus from the great Ray Brown on "Days Of Wine And Roses". Ray really gets around the bass on this one!

Going to the Village Vanguard on a Wednesday night in the dead of winter is one of the great privileges of being a New Yorker. Last evening was Peter Bernstein, Sullivan Fortner, Vicente Archer, and Joe Farnsworth, sounding like a million bucks.

Had such an awesome time at Winter Jazz Fest this year, I saw 10 concerts and the highlights were literally everything. You know how there’s a spiderman movie where he goes to a planet of spider people? That’s how winter jazz fest feels to me

today's 7.5 mile run on hopefully recovering right knee featured listening to Amaro Freitas' "Y'Y", and the new High On Fire "Cometh The Storm". Both were good listens! Brandee Younger is one of my favorite musicians, I loved hearing her on Y'Y.

Playing Monday Jan 6th, 8-11pm at Tattoo Bar in Brooklyn. We're playing 3 sets of all original music, if you're a musician, please bring your instrument and sit in!

did a slow 10 miler today and listened to Andrew Hill's "Compulsion". Cool record, been a while since I've heard it, the piano's recorded sound is not great. Felt less focused than the incredible "Judgement!". Nagging knee injury didn't help the vibe!

I did my long run of the week today, a 16 miler, and listened to two really great records: Masaaki Suzuki playing Bach's French Suites on harpsichord, and Toscanini conducting Brahms 3. At first I didn't know what to think of Brahms 3 but it's really growing on me!

listening to the Mosaic "Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions", wow, Jimmy Garrison sounds so amazing playing trio. Maybe the best trio bassist of all time? 😮

Took down a chorus of the incredible Larry Grenadier on “I’ll Be Seeing You”. For whatever reason I’ve always had trouble remembering the harmony on this tune, Larry plays a simple, supportive line and plays some cool embellishments.

When I first started playing upright I used to transcribe solos and then also the bassline underneath, it's a lot of work but I've always felt it really helps in understanding the context in which the bassline is happening. This is Miles and Percy Heath on "Bemsha Swing"!

Really liked this recent photo of me on a gig (credit to @shootingj on instagram)

What's one album you spent a lot of time with this year that wasn't new or a re-issue? For me, I really loved Mulgrew Miller's "Live At The Kennedy Center". Of course Mulgrew sounds fantastic, but Rodney Green and Derrick Hodge are an INCREDIBLE rhythm section. So locked in, so swinging.

Sorry to read of Zakir Husseins passing. Incredibly thankful I got to see him live last summer with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. It was so good a friend joked to me that Zakir appeared to be levitating during the performance. What an incredible musician and artist www.npr.org/2024/12/15/n...

How crazy is it that Bill Evans didn't comp for Lee Konitz on "Live At The Half Note" apparently because he felt he was sharp?

If you are feeling bandcamp Friday, here's our latest release: paulsanwald.bandcamp.com/album/the-la... The cover photo is a picture of my late father's workshop, as he left it ❤️

I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of playing jazz gigs at noisy but appreciative bars.

Drop everything and watch the short doc The Only Girl in the Orchestra on Netflix, about Orin O'Brien the first woman in the NY Phil. 35 minutes of pure joy and inspiration. Required watching for all music heads

Took down a chorus of Ron Carter on “invitation” from Joe Henderson’s “Tetragon”. Surely some mistakes, but I find this really helpful to just get the vibe

Playing some jazz in Brooklyn this Thursday!

TBH I felt like most everyone in the Yacht Rock Dockumentary is a really good musician, in terms of execution. Probably not my favorite genre but everyone was grooving and singing in tune.

another release I really loved this year is the great Kenny Barron's album "Beyond This Place" featuring Immanuel Wilkins, Kyoshi Kitagawa, and Johnathan Blake. Releases happen so frequently these days it's easy to love something and forget about it, but I've really enjoyed revisiting this one.

One album I keep coming back to this year is Julius Rodriguez’s “Evergreen”: caught his band at winter jazz fest last year and was a huge fan, such a great *album*, not just a collection of tunes.

Charlie Shavers and Ben Webster playing "Stardust" might be the greatest video on the internet: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Of5y...

More and more, feels like Lou Bega is the greatest One And Done artist of all time
