Only the trumpers at @pbsnews.org could do a piece on Covid-19 and fail to mention the U.S. had the world's highest death toll, 1.2 MILLION, more than India or China, with more deaths in anti-science red states than in blue thanks to Maga resistance to public health measures.

Whether the "Doge" cuts are good or bad is irrelevant. The point is, Musk is bypassing Dems & Congress. trump's given himself the "line item veto" Reagan used to bitch about not having. And Dems & media don't seem to grasp that it's fundamentally unconstitutional.

假作真時真亦假, 無為有處有還無。 Truth becomes fiction when the fiction's true; Real becomes not-real when the unreal's real.

Just had an idea for a solution to Daylight Saving Time that seems obvious yet which I've NEVER, EVER heard anyone else suggest: split the difference. Most of the U.S. just sprang forward 1 hour. Fall back 30 minutes, and leave it like that forever. [1/2]

Paul McCartney concluding SNL 50 by singing the love we take is equal to the love we make seemed, sadly, like the end of a cultural moment in time that started in the Sixties & Seventies, and which will now give way to a very different age.

The American Century is ending and the Chinese Century, China's century, is beginning, in real time, before our eyes. From now on, the most valuable subject our kids can learn is Chinese (languages). "Mandarin" = 普通话 = pu tong hua.

Hottest Places on Earth (in descending order): 3. Kebili, Sahara Desert, Tunisia (131F on 1931-07-07) 2. Furnace Creek, Death Valley, CA (134F on 1913-07-10) 1. Any WC, CR, 화장실 (hwa jang sil), 卫生间 (wei sheng jian), 厕所 (ce suo), or other restroom, public or private, in East Asia.

Truly enjoyed the movie 'Saturday Night' and the wild scene at 30 Rock just prior to the very first SNL. What a great young cast. I never knew Chevy Chase & Belushi hated each other; or that NBC brass was mere seconds away from airing a Johnny Carson re-run instead. [Netflix]

新年快乐 (xin nian kuai le) = Happy New Year 蛇年快乐 (she nian kuai le) = Happy Snake Year 恭喜发财 (gong xi fa cai) = Wish You Prosperity

The best places on Earth might not be the tropical beaches or alpine mountains we visited, but rather the bars & restaurants where we were regulars who danced on the dancefloor, won at pool, and at one time or another sat on every barstool, in every booth, and at every table.

The Revolutionary War in a nutshell: 1775 was all about Boston. Americans win. 1776 was about New York. Americans lose. 1777 was about Philadelphia. Mixed results. U.S. victory at Saratoga; France backs U.S. 1780-81 about Carolinas/Virginia. U.S. wins.

It took four years, but thanks to the inaction of Mitch McConnell & Merrick Garland the Jan. 6th coup at last succeeded. Joe Biden's precious "legacy" is the triumph of fascism and the end of what eventually will be known to history as the First American Republic.

After last night's 'The Honeymooners' (the one where Ralph learns to mambo) I stuck around and was rewarded with a Billy Mumy 'Twilight Zone' (the one where his dead grandma talks to him by phone) and an hour-long Hitchcock with James Mason & Angie Dickinson. (MeTV)

"Then the aliens probed me in very private places for what seemed like a long time. The next thing I knew, I was back in my truck on the side of the road, and it was already dark."

I don't think Marty is ever getting the Sports Almanac back. I think we might be stuck in the Biff Tannen timeline.

Because we gave Dems the trifecta, and they didn't do a fucking thing other than join the insurrectionists in passing trillion dollar *defense* budgets and other bipartisan giveaways to corporate America? trump didn't spend even one night in jail.

Maybe an electoral system created for slaveowners in the 1700's in which votes in some states count more than votes in other states, and elections aren't won by the candidate who gets the most votes, is the problem.

20th century: Well-regulated capitalism, Democratic capitalism, produces the greatest middle class in world history. 21st century: Deregulated/unregulated capitalism, Republican capitalism, generates a dystopia of haves and have-nots.

It's just so weird, watching a once-great country come apart at the seams because of a land-based electoral system from the 1700's that cannot be changed, and which allows religious extremists allied with greedy billionaires to dominate a secular-minded majority.

Filé gumbo is in the Hank Williams song 'Jambalaya.' Today I learned filé is made from sassafras yet is banned as a controlled substance, with a relationship to MDMA (which, to be honest, as a Boomer, I don't know). Also, gumbo means okra.

One silver lining to the end of what eventually will be known as the First American Republic is that never again will I feel the betrayal of helping elect a Dem who promises progressive solutions but turns out to be a Republican (or "libertarian") in sheep's clothing.

Remember how great it felt when VP Harris came flying in off the top rope, calling trump weird and putting corporate media in its place? That someone was fighting for us, at last, for two whole weeks or so, before the James Carvilles of the world got hold of her campaign? [sigh]
