Happy #TwinPeaks Day!

Owen Chase continued in the whaling fleets for many more years but left it. He suffered from nightmares and had to be institutionalized. He died in 1869. George Pollard captained another whaler but after losing it, he went into the merchant service. He died in 1870. #hatm

The discovery of oil in Pennsylvania was in 1859, nine years after this conversation and eight after the publication of Moby Dick. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Pollard and Chase were still alive in 1850 (living until 1870 and 1869 respectively), though Nickerson outlived them both (dying in 1883). Both Chase and Nickerson wrote accounts of the sinking of the Essex, though not as successful as Moby Dick. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Chase returning home to find a new daughter actually happened with a later voyage (where he was once again First Mate), though would eventually become Captain in his own right. He later married Matthew Joy's widow (after his own wife died), though had a rough life. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

I feel like this film should have been in contention for the Makeup Oscar that year for these sequences, which was (rightfully) won by Fury Road. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

#HATM #InTheHeartofTheSea "You were born for this job. I was just born into it." That sums up class in the 19th Century.

After abandoning ship,in a cruel twist of fate, they chose not to make for the Marquesas or Society Islands just 1200 and 2000 miles away with favorable currents and winds,(they feared they would find cannibals there). Instead they sailed south, hoping to catch winds east to South America. #HATM

I unabashedly loved Avatar 2 for the scene in which the whale takes out the boat. We need more whales just smashing up whaling boats in movies. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Pollard isn't necessarily a bad captain for making a bad call, but for not listening to his first officer's advice and for passing blame for a bad outcome. Good leaders listen and learn from mistakes, their own and others (regrettably, good leaders remain is short supply). #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

"You are nothing more than the son of a farmer who managed to bully his way into an officer's tunic." This does get to how inextricable class is in America - half a century after overthrowing the monarchy, they're still having fights over upbringing. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

I think the visual effects here were stronger than some others from the same year; I'd certainly put this in over The Revenant, but I found that movie entirely overrated. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Pollard's behavior is defensible: he is meant to be ABOVE the crew, so that he can make the difficult decisions that might get his men killed, and there is a need to ensure that everyone understands he is the ultimate decision maker...but he is a bit of a dick about it. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Mystic Seaport, eh? Perhaps they could stop in for a quick slice at Mystic Pizza. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

The role of Captain George Pollard (Benjamin Walker) was considered for Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, and Henry Cavill at various points, any of which really would have been something (though I think Pollard needs to be a smaller actor than those). #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

There's an interesting class element - Pollard is the son of a ship captain, while Chase is the son of a farmer (though Pollard was older and more experienced in the real world version), but the idea of "the captain is not a friend" captures the larger class frictions. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Hawthorne is a great writer, though his novels are not so great (I teach mostly his spooky short stories and his journal entry where he complains about a train whistle that is emblematic of our own destruction of paradise). #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

Listening to "Barrett's Privateers" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQbh...) to get in the mood for this...and in case I need to sing a fake Canadian sea shanty to cross the border at some point. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

In The Heart of the Sea flopped in December 2015, landing in 2nd against the 4th week of Mockingjay Part II before falling to 8th against Episode VII. It did a little better worldwide, reaching $94 million against its $100 million budget, but no awards attention sank it. #InTheHeartOfTheSea #HATM

"The real damage is done by those millions who want to ‘survive.’ Those with no sides and no causes. Those who don’t like to make waves—or enemies. Those for whom freedom, honor, truth, and principles are only literature." -- 21 yr old Sophie Scholl, following her arrest by the Nazis

Reminder that when he had the same delusion about Twitter and wasted everyone’s time and resources on it, zero “ghost employees” were found Everything is fucking stupid now, huh

Dear manager: In the past week... 1. I lied. 2. I cheated. 3. I bribed men to cover up the crimes of other men. 4. I was an accessory to murder. 5. But the most damning thing of all…I think I can live with it…and if I had to do it all over again…I would.

Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels haven't aged well. For example, Moonraker - published almost exactly 70 years ago in April 1955 - features a villain who's a super-rich industrialist and rocket-maker seeking to cause chaos because he's a secret Nazi. Such a silly idea!

This week I ditched the Review Roulette wheel to think through Casablanca with my favorite co-analyst over tapas and hot chocolate. Special thanks to @brattletheatre.bsky.social for showing it on Valentine's Day at great expense (explained in first comment) vaughnjoy.substack.com/p/heres-thin...

In 2018 my cousin Kyle died from Pancreatic cancer. I pray that this vaccine trial doesn't get derailed by the nazi in chief because I don't want anyone else to go through what Kyle did. He was only 29 and it kills me that he's not here anymore.

Actually, statistically, only 2% of marriages end in divorce. That figure is just artificially inflated to the 50% we're all familiar with because of how divorced elon musk is

…. Anyone wanna do SNL? I would but if I do one myself there‘s only one obvious choice.

The last month has been the least-subtle time in world history, I am convinced.
