On my way home from Brain of London quiz. Made it through qualifiers to get to tonight's event, but out in the first round tonight. Managed not to embarrass myself too badly either score-wise of getting any physics questions wrong quizleagueoflondon.co.uk/results/resu...

University of Derby faces mass job cuts as management plans to make half of senior academics redundant. Please spread the word. www.ucu.org.uk/article/1398...

'Most of the cuts would be through a voluntary redundancy scheme, with enhanced terms. However, the spokesperson was unable to rule out compulsory job losses.' Lincoln is one of the great success stories of HE in the past two decades. Its 2nd bout of redundancies in 2 years is a real blow.

Home Office once again seeking to reduce UK exports of higher education. As if the sector wasn't in enough trouble already (and not getting the attention such as important one should get). www.ft.com/content/f441...

Nice to see that the Springer 30% computer science sale includes this 1977 book on FORTRAN programming

Quantum information studies can give inspiration for simplifications in classical methods - such as in this "weak entanglement approximation for nuclear structure" by Johnson and Gorton arxiv.org/abs/2504.00273

I like this one

Wait, BBC, these are all documentaries?

NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID. This is what actual campus censorship looks like.

Hey moth fans! Happy mother’s day!

🎉I am very happy to see our Barren Plateau Review published in Nature Review Physics. This article condenses 6 years of our LANL work, but also so many amazing papers by the community!! Check it here 👇 www.nature.com/articles/s42...

From Columbia Univeristy: "There’s a reason the place is quiet: most people are terrified of what will happen to them if they say the wrong thing" From Peter Woit's blog www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpr...

Oh god but this guy’s half phone conversation on the phone is loud and boring.

Sorry to read about the death of Basil Hiley. Nice to see his daughter contributed to the "Other Lives" section of the Obituaries in the Guardian to make sure his death was marked. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

“They are made from a material such as metal such that their coiled shape can be extended and compressed repeatedly without exceeding the elastic limit” That’s my spring statement

Oh no! if the wider rail network pick up this rule, then that's most of my usual holidays with the kids scuppered.

Always nice when the mountains behind Woking come into view

Only a few days until my microwave will be telling the right time again

post a warning

@actualnames.bsky.social this just chugged past as I cycled under a railway bridge. Nearly fell off my bike

Maybe it's time to retire this from my outward facing staff profile. I mean, who needs to know I am a member of the Institute of Physics

Amazing how the brain can fill in the gaps when letters are missing in words. For instance, in this advert, I could immediately see that there is a book out there called "How to kiss your fanny"

A new paper from me from the proceedings of the '24 Compound Nuclear Reactions conference

A day in the city

Whoever said news media only report on bad news should take a look at ... oh

Maybe I shouldn't have notifications on my work laptop synced to things my phone wants to tell me. Never know what might pop up (and in this case, I already know and like the band)

Ironically, there is some reward for organising a major conference - everyone attending appreciates the effort, often leading to enhanced visibility & uplift in invitations elsewhere. Reviewing papers for Nature journals, however, is uncompensated work with no upside. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
