🧪 YAASSSSS: 16 state AGs just sued NSF for its illegal changes in "agency priorities" The broad scope would seem to not only address grant terminations...but also the underlying basis for closing programs, returning proposals without review, etc. The filing: www.doj.state.or.us/wp-content/u...

To get Pell Grants, students will now need to take 15 credits (5 classes) instead of 12 credits. Students with limited finances also have to work! This will guarantee failure for many of these students making the difficult transition between rigorous colleges and less rigorous high schools

I just can’t. They do not care at all about merit and I’m so tired of the lies. As a student who had NOTHING going into college but was very bright, even with Pell grants I still had to work to pay for basic needs. A bill like this would have ensured my likelihood of success shrank to near zero.

the revealed position of the republican party is that it thinks broad expansion of higher education — and especially its expansion for certain americans — was a mistake that must be rolled back

an overwhelming percentage of cuts at the NSF are to STEM education. experts see it as part of a broader attack on DEI, as well as on education as a whole. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/s...

“you should have a choice” means “we get to choose for you”

happy NSF Friday to all who are in therapy about it

Not a surprising quote, but still incredibly frustrating.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

NEWS: I just led 112 of my colleagues in demanding answers from the Trump Administration on their funding freeze of the National Science Foundation. Cutting off NSF funding threatens vital research, stalls innovation, and risks ceding global scientific leadership to China.

Every Friday has been torture since my grant was terminated 3 weeks ago.

62% of Americans strongly or somewhat favor maintaining federal funding for scientific and medical research at colleges and universities. apnorc.org/projects/few...

🧪 Ranking member Lofgren and 11 other House dems sent a fiery 7-page letter to acting NSF director today "The cancelation of these awards suggests instead that NSF is willing to apply political censorship of awards under direction from President Trump and the DOGE teenagers" Share widely #SaveNSF

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

I've reviewed many NSF proposals, and I've been on a few NSF proposal review panels. Those experiences helped me see that while some good proposals aren't funded, bad proposals definitely aren't. It's an insult to all scientists that DOGE is now doing additional reviews of funded proposals.

Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.

Because no one spends as much on science as the US does, destroying NIH, NSF, NOAA, NASA, EPA, USDA, USGS, etc. is leading to a brain drain, but it's not to other countries but rather from science. This senseless destruction of US science will hurt the US and the world for a very long time.

I'm lucky that despite my award termination I can continue doing science (for a few months while waiting out appeals, court cases). Today I'm prepping my talks for a conference at which Rümeysa Öztürk was also to present. Instead, an empty poster stand. What a loss for science and for our country.

New 🧵 on the full list of 1042 NSF terminations so far. Second post below shows how NSF's STEM education directorate is particularly targeted, accounting for... -40% of terminated awards -53% of terminated obligated spending Round 2 (last Fri) was also less connected to Cruz's list than Round 1.

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday. I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further. If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

yesterday, my postdoc funding (salary and research funds) was cancelled by the National Science Foundation, effective immediately. I received the same generic, vaguely threatening, typo-ridden email as many of my colleagues who have had their awards terminated recently. (1/n)

Happy to be corrected, but the only Alabama institution of higher learning I see on this list is Talladega College, an HBCU that has faced financial struggle over the last few years.

It’s my turn to join scholars whose grants got terminated. I’m grateful that we spent that $ gathering in February & building a community who will continue to freedom dream an expansive #BER w/ radical hope that together we’ll build something > the current western, colonial, & capitalist system.

14 National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate Sites in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences were hit yesterday with DOGE-mandated terminations.

Morale in academic research community right now is whatever is below rock bottom. The uncertainty and unpredictability are overwhelming. The mental and physical toll on U.S. based scientists is significant and will be long-lasting. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Scientists must push back against the threat of rising white nationalism and the dangerous and pseudoscientific ideas of eugenics https://go.nature.com/4jGqiUc

The head of Harvard is doubling down on his defiance against Trump — saying he "will not compromise on certain issues" despite the funding threat. "We are defending what I believe is one of the most important lynchpins of the American economy and way of life." www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Walz: If you say you love freedom but you don't believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love is not freedom, it is privilege.

In addition to the terminations of existing awards, new NSF grants are still stopped completely since DOGE was granted access to systems a week ago. Last Thursday, an agency spokesperson said "NSF continues to issue awards." That does not appear to be the case.

Based on the titles ~6 independent postdoctoral research fellowships were canceled (including my own), along with ~4 postdoctoral training programs. For those of us affected, it's not just our research -- it's our entire salary.

This data confirms the political attacks on NSF are esp targeting training the next generation of scientists. The top 3 divisions with the most terminations are about education, relating to: 1. Research on learning 2. Broadening participation in STEM 3. Engineering education

@katrinamillerphd.bsky.social & I took a look at over 400 active National Science Foundation grants that got killed in the past few days. Here's our story (gift link) nyti.ms/4jp4aOx

I’ve seen a couple of people suggest donating to the UA LGBTQ alumni association in light of Trump inviting himself to campus. They hold events for alumni and provide scholarships for current students. I donated and it felt good. www.rollpride.org/scholarships

This is so embarrassing.

I wish Trump could feel shame because it’s very embarrassing to invite yourself to be a graduation speaker for a university that doesn’t do graduation speakers.
