Guardian article on NIH www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Some things to know about General Brown: - 41 years of military service - F16 fighter pilot and instructor with 3000 flight hours, 130 in combat - Master’s in aeronautical science - son of a U.S. Army colonel and Vietnam veteran - grandson of a WW2 veteran

They're rescinding some admissions; any students who trusted Penn and withdrew other applications are in trouble. The funding uncertainty isn't Penn's fault; the choice to put the risk on the students was. I wrote about this weeks ago: brianomeara.info/posts/uncert... . Worth considering in future.

Do it. It’s easy.

Usually when states go to court alleging federal coercion in violation of the 10th Amendment there is not a literal video of the President doing it.

““This crisis — and I’m not exaggerating by calling it a crisis — has already consumed one funding cycle…But if this block to publishing in the register continues on much longer, it’s going to swallow two funding cycles, and that will put many labs out of business.” @labonnelab.bsky.social

From a source at NIH, some grants may be nixed because the investigator’s bio sketch mentions DEI-related activities, even if the science itself has nothing to do with it.

NIH continues to fund non-competing awards...except for guess who? drugmonkey.wordpress.com/2025/02/21/n...

I will be very interested to see what organizations that have already scrubbed/removed DEI content (National Academies, American Society of Microbiology -- see my stories) will do if these orders are deemed to be illegal and violate constitutional rights. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center say results of a Phase I trial of an mRNA vaccine aimed at preventing pancreatic cancer show promise. The vaccine PREVENTED the cancer from coming back in patients who had already received treatment for MORE THAN three years. 🧪🧵⬇️

Breaking news: President Trump abruptly dismissed the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a social media post, delivering a blow to the military’s top brass as the Trump administration moves to align the Pentagon with its “America First” agenda.

I have now heard from multiple sources that NIH staff can now travel, going to scientific meetings. They can also participate in peer review of papers. Still not allowed to talk about NIH policies. This may affect in person study section meetings (if the powers that be will let these be scheduled)

Happy to see a large chunk of my PhD work published today in Cell Host&Microbe: www.cell.com/cell-host-mi... We conducted fluorescence-activated single-cell sorting of active predatory protists in the ocean and recovered symbionts with cool evolutionary positions close to animal pathogens.

Why do we keep letting a handful of people control our country, when it’s clear we have the power to take it back? What's stopping us from rising up and demanding real change now? bsky.app/profile/eyky...

"Even NIH officers don’t know what will happen next." In our latest @science.org Working Life essay, an assistant professor expresses frustration with stalls at NIH and asks: "Will my grants ever be reviewed?" @vjrp.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...

The FDA’s regulatory work prevents infections and ensures safety of medical devices. Nearly 200 FDA employees—many funded by industry fees, not taxpayers—were just let go. In the end, this costs the public and saves them nothing www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...

New — All Department of Defense agencies were sent a video of an agitated Pete Hegseth debunking supposedly fake media stories. Today at least one agency called an “emergency” town hall and forced employees to watch the propaganda. www.dvidshub.net/video/953069...

Already bruised by the Trump administration’s first round of firings of federal workers, employees at NIH faced more bad news. NIH’s 27 institute directors were told this week that the agency must cut staffing back to 2019 levels, or at least 10% below its 2024 tally. scim.ag/3EP8gjy

BREAKING: The Associated Press sues three Trump administration officials over access to presidential events, citing the First Amendment.

I hope that everyone in the private sector who depends on federal grants to train their researchers and staff, pay for their services and products, or benefits in any other way from federal funding will come out to #standupforscience!

Please reskeet and tag your favorite lab supply/tech companies, biotech, pharma, journals, etc. etc. accounts!

Weird because Congressional staffs visited by a few of my colleagues this week begged them to keep up the pressure with phone calls from constituents.

BREAKING — States attorneys general lead by @newyorkstateag.bsky.social were just granted a preliminary injunction in their case against DOGE. The team cannot access Treasury Department payment systems or data while the lawsuit proceeds. Major.

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but the Federal Register block is intentionally being used to stop NIH from awarding grants. They might not call it a freeze, but things are effectively frozen. We need legal action ASAP.

And now the Trump administration has opened an investigation of the Maine Department of Education

Even if you’re not a Florida voter, this election affects you. A loss for MAGA Republicans in FL-01 means: • A weaker F47 agenda • Stronger protections for democracy, voting rights, & civil liberties • A step toward taking back the House in 2024 #Valimont4Congress www.dailykos.com/stories/2025...

Judge Amir Ali of the U.S. District Court for DC, without holding the Trump administration in contempt for continuing to freeze aid, wrote that theTRO doesn’t “permit it to continue suspending duly appropriated foreign aid “ with new, post-hoc rationalizations.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/h...

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Trump Administration Stalls Scientific Research Despite Court Ruling Using an arcane law, officials have effectively delayed funding from the National Institutes of Health, leaving medical studies in jeopardy.

JUST IN: A judge has enjoined President Trump's effort to block federal funds from going toward grant recipients who engage in DEI practices. The judge says the orgs are likely to succeed on claims that this is viewpoint discrimination, among other issues storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

300 people showed up outside of Murkowski & Sullivan's offices. On a Thursday. In February. In Anchorage, Alaska! Alaskans are taking a stand and demand our elected officials to do the same. We don't expect you to save us but we do expect you to STAND WITH US! In-person town hall anyone??

Thank you to Senate Democrats for unifying in opposition to Republicans’ scheme to punish working families. Democrats played procedural hardball and spent hours on the floor debating overnight, filing close to 100 amendments and forcing votes on 23 of them.
