If we continue on this trajectory, we risk becoming a country that cannot afford to teach its own language, support its own culture, or train enough professionals to run its public services ✍️ James Downs wp.me/p8Mk4U-VIp

This is not circulating enough among mathematicians 🧮 Cardiff University is threatening 1/2 of its staff in maths with compulsory redundancy, despite returning a significant surplus to the university

Two Weeks In The Death Spiral Of Cardiff University, by an anonymous academic. This is truly shocking read. The Cardiff executive board should hang their heads in shame. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

As someone who studied German at a Welsh University, who married a German, & has half-German kids, I find it unfathomable Cardiff Uni would cut modern languages entirely. Especially when it has the ££ to avoid doing so.👇

A trade union whose members at Cardiff University are fighting 400 job cuts and the closure of five Schools have called on the Learned Society of Wales to suspend fellowships previously awarded to the university’s two most senior academics ✍️Martin Shipton

S4C: "The minister responsible for HE in Wales has asked universities to "consider all options", including using its financial reserves, to prevent job losses." The Uni has confirmed to Cardiff UCU it has not allocated a use for up to £188m of accessible cash. 1/2 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Newly published accounts for Cardiff University - which has announced massive job cuts and School closures - reveal that its overall surplus increased by nearly sixfold in a year and that its unrestricted cash reserves are as high as £500m ✍️Martin Shipton

That's accurate.

In the early 1900s, Emmy Noether explored the mathematical consequences of symmetries. In doing so, she shook the very foundations of fundamental physics. https://buff.ly/414iuVL

Some wonderful solidarity here re the Cardiff university cuts. Many excellent points made. via @theguardian.com letters. @ucu.org.uk @llantwit.bsky.social

Wales’ higher education landscape could be “devastated” by the large-scale cuts announced by Cardiff University, academics have warned #AcademicSky #EduSky

Why not acknowledge that the whole sector needs an overhaul? Running universities like businesses and funding them through extortionate overseas fees and a botched full economic costing system has failed. Time for a rethink. Education matters. Science matters. @jostevenslabour.bsky.social

Staff at Cardiff University fear huge job cuts are about to be announced by a senior management team that has already spoken of an ‘immediate existential crisis’ ✍️Martin Shipton

Taking Britain out of the Erasmus+ programme was a huge mistake. Labour must rejoin and accept the EU’s offer of a youth mobility scheme

The British public in general – and every key group of Labour target voters in particular – seem to support EU freedom of movement. Even Reform voters only seem to oppose it 44-45. Should politicians believe the voters? www.theneweuropean.co.uk/the-public-i...
