In winter we typically get pretty light winds here in the bay area. After many months of drifting around a course on our weekly Sunday dinghy racing, it was really nice to be able to blast around the bay today in 30kt gusts! Definitely blew the cobwebs out for another week of sciencing.

no money moves tomorrow. cash at your local small businesses only!

What is happening. I just received my 9th review request in less than a week. People hiding from politics submitting papers?

I set my students a data reproducibility assignment this year (find 5 recent papers, see if data is available, and whether they can reproduce key figures. Super interesting to see what they found, and they are all realizing that FAIR practices mean also giving model outputs, not just data!

Our dog has a tendency to make most dog beds look too small. On the way home on Thursday, I saw a free toddler mattress on the kerb..with some effort i got it home on my bike, thinking it was going to be way too big...he still spills off it!

Amidst all the doom, I am extremely grateful to have my wonderfully rescue pup to provide top quality snuggles while tidying up a paper supplement. I can't believe no one wanted this precious soul for his first 9 months in the shelter, and I got him for free!

Great time at Chapman with my group. They got to see an eruption, and on the way back to Kona stopped to see the amazing xenoliths from Hualālai. What a great week of science and meeting collaborators.

Had a fab first day at the 150 person Chapman 'caldera forming eruptions' conference..while the beautiful setting certainly helped, it's more than meeting people/networking is so much easier/better than at AGU. Big conferences suck, small ones are the way to go!

Went for a wee walk and reminded myself how magical Hawaii is. Could see snow capped Mauna Kea from the parking lot of my airbnb!

Open air cultural gardens in Honolulu post security are an absolute treat. Best way to spend an hour lay over! Can't believe I'm the only one here

Science PIs - what are y'all thinking the odds of our existing NSF grants getting cancelled are (if they contain some of the spicy words). Not sure how we are supposed to be making hiring decisions (grads, postdocs) without knowing if it's 1%, 50,% of 99%. Vibes estimate is fine!

If true, all my grants are toast, but some of these words are also science words! 'Diverse groups of olivine', 'crystallized melt inclusions will be excluded', 'water flows over a barrier',

Just pushed some new code to both Thermobar and DiadFit that helps you petrologists plot pressure and depth on a single graph for a non-linear pressure-depth relationship (e.g. 2, 3, 4 layered crusts, specified density-depth profiles). DiadFit: diadfit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Ex...

I haven't seen my brother in 3 yrs and was so excited to show off the beautiful bay area and amazing winter weather. Instead this atmospheric river meant Berkeley did it's best 'UK weather' impersonation. You would never know SF is right across the water from the views...thank god for GoreTex!

On Tuesday (28th, 4 PM) EST I am running a 'skill building' session for the CONVERSE webinar series all about thermobarometry! Not too late to sign up, please just DM me and i'll send you the google sign up sheet! Some new fancy features to show off (e.g. functions to calculate all equations)

I wish I could understand why people who put supplemental calculators in their supplement in excel feel the need to lock the spreadsheet. I just want the coefficients at the precision you used, vs. the shortened ones in the paper, and SCIENTIFIC REPRODUCABILITY.

Very proud of my research group for this awesome team effort! Obtaining magma storage depths within a day of sample receipt (thanks to production lines, efficient processing code and Raman being an awesome technique). Check out @cljdevitre.bsky.social for more detail if you like volcanoes!

⚒️ Can we measure magma storage depths fast enough to support volcanic observatories during ongoing eruptions? In our new JPET paper, we teamed up with HVO to simulate real-time rapid-response CO2 fluid inclusion barometry at Kīlauea, HI. We got depths in 1 day! How? Read on! (1/5)

Moving climates is wild..back in the UK I'd have been thrilled for 10C for a days winter sailing, toasty! Now, it feels utterly freezing and it has taken me hours to psyche up the courage to leave my warm house. Guess I'm spoilt I normally race in winter in legging and a Tshirt in 16C+ temps.

Severe food intolerances suck. I've been so good for the last 9 months of preparing every single meal myself. I decide to get Mexican last night for Matt birthday, thought I'd checked for ingredient, and still wake up feeling like I'm going to die.

After a major power cut on campus on Saturday, I decided not to go to work and torture myself working out if we lost any instruments/detectors (tomorows job). Instead, I managed to win the most lopsided trophy ever at the annual Cal Sailing Club winter regatta! #WorkLifeBalance #StillGotIt

Me : I just need one EBSD map and then this paper is ready to submit My vintage thin section: I've actually had enough of being stuck to this glass for 30yrs, I'm just going to fall off here as you colloidal polish me.
