The “free speech crisis”. A fiction fabricated by the populist right: “the rhetoric of a ‘free speech crisis’ paradoxically becomes an increasingly powerful way for right-wing political actors to deny political legitimacy to those opposed to their political positions”

I see Prof. Dunning-Kruger is at it again www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

To those claiming Musk’s salute was ok. I challenge them to try it in their workplace.

Anyone else working on environmental issues feel just so utterly defeated today?

Those in @senedd.wales are failing on nature. Neatly summed up by the below: “In June 2021, the Welsh government promised to set legally binding biodiversity targets, but it admitted to the committee that these targets were now unlikely to be set until 2029.” All talk no trousers.

““There's also a reason why productivity growth is lacking. And I think that has for a lot to do with the complexity of our society, that the smartest people are no longer working on inventing new stuff, but trying to hold everything together.” We can’t pretend economic growth is a natural law.

Breaking news… Populists are popular. Politics shouldn’t be a popularity contest.

Inequality in the UK costs >£100bn a year vs OECD average. COVID saw a massive accumulation of government money by the super rich. We cannot borrow that money back. That is the problem right now. We need to take it back. We need to tax the super rich. A must watch ⬇️

One of the best things about the heavy snow. The visibility given to the animals that largely move out of sight of human eyes. Not two lynx, but two fox tracks.

In the past 10 days, the richest 1% have emitted more carbon than the poorest 50% will in 3 years. The top 1% emit enough carbon to 1.3 million deaths due to excess heat. The super rich are burning people and the planet. Tax the rich. End inequality. It’s the only way.

Can you support Tir Natur in the largest ecosystem restoration project in Wales? If you can, do. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/cynefin-ap...

“A network of biodiverse, well-managed ancient and native woodlands extends throughout the landscape of Eryri, from natural treeline communities, montane scrub and fridd to temperate rainforest, hedges, ancient trees, wood pasture and orchards” A dream? An @eryrinpa 2125 Vision

Just watched All Of Us Strangers. Maybe the best film I’ve seen in 2024. Cripes 😢

The Last Observers. What a great short film about a Swedish couple who recorded the weather for 36 years. And so much more. youtu.be/nWbESISCdgA?...

Recommended reading on one of the most debated topics in the UK. “The United Kingdom asylum system is indeed broken. It is, to a very significant extent, the Conservative government that broke it. It was on their watch that small boat crossings soared and so did the asylum backlog”

Any tips to survive casual racism from guests (family members) at Christmas which avoids confrontation? I have a problem in letting these things go unchallenged, but typically it doesn’t end well. I can only walk away and empty the bin so many times in one day 😂

Despite the UK and EU banning harmful biocides at home, they’re still exporting them to the Global South, harming health and the environment. Often reimporting food produced using these. Time to stop this toxic trade. ☠️: corporateeurope.org/en/2024/05/d...

My top tip for people wanting to support small scale farmers with the ultimate transparency - try crowdfarming.com. Great for products we can’t grow here in UK. I just got some some olive oil from Proyecto Los Aires, which even includes a regenerative farming score with a detailed progress report.

🔴Conservative MPs Want to Scrap Workers’ Rights to Paid Holiday and Annual Leave They are also seeking to overturn workplace protections from sexual harassment, calling them an attack on “free speech” bylinetimes.com/2024/12/17/c...

“It’s really important that people demonstrate to governments around the world that they care about climate change” Who said this back in 2015 at the screening of the excellent documentary “Racing Extinction”. Your man Elon Musk.

A good line on some of the responses to the first few months of Labour: “being perpetually disappointed by politicians is a comfortable position: it means they can avoid thinking about whether the things they want – eg better public services without tax rises – are compatible”

☠️ Exporting ecocide across the globe ☠️ Every year the UK exports thousands of tons of biocides banned for use here. Syngenta, the Chinese state owned, Swiss headquartered, agrichemical business produces these in Huddersfield and is responsible for 98% of these exports.

This is an astonishing statistic, which most people don’t appreciate. When we phase out fossil fuels, we can eliminate 40% of international shipping along with it.
