"We’re witnessing the self-sabotage of the United States" from @davidfrum.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Any remaining arguments against the rearmament of Europe just evaporated in front of the eyes of every single European head of state this evening.

Very tough day yesterday, with the US siding with Russia against Ukraine. But at least all of those people who told us for three years that Ukraine was just a US proxy will now admit they were wrong (no?)

NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

Gorgeous graphic. Would be curious about variation in e.g. Central Europe

Wow. We’re all well aware of events but this is still an astonishing thing for an imminent German Chancellor to say publicly. The alliance, as we know it, is dead and members are realising that - although each at a very different pace.

I heard you like nostalgia? smbc-comics.com/comic/fads

These 37 minutes are this week's most recommended viewing. It is an opinion piece about technology use. It is easy to understand for people from all walks of life. As a tech person, I'm in full agreement with everything that's said, including recommendations on how to use information technology.

But why? It’s a mystery!

Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay “They think they want good government and justice for all, Vimes, yet what is it they really crave, deep in their hearts? Only that things go on as normal and tomorrow is pretty much like today.”

Disappointed to learn that the German "Die Linke" still opposes sending weapons to Ukraine and asks for peace talks instead. Trump likes this.

Berlin today. Dark and tense mood hanging over everything. As ppl head to the polls tomorrow, the stakes could not be higher for Germany’s future and Europe. And everyone knows it here.

Some Democrats are still waiting for Republicans to come around. They might as well be waiting for Godot. #HopingIsNotAStrategy

Just gutted 😢 This is a short train ride from our place; hits differently if you recognize all the news footage from when you were last getting some gelato there. www.bbc.com/news/article...

The DOJ has a response to POTUS. Carved in stone.

🇺🇸carefully created an opening for Beijing to present itself as rooting for 🇺🇦and 🇪🇺seat at the table — a seat that is being denied by the Trump Administration. The US presented Wang Yi with the best possible Munich weekend he could have imagined. 🇨🇳delegation must have truly had fun.

A simple shift from "I told you so" to "I was scared this would happen" is an opening. Follow that up with, "how can I help" and links and numbers to immigrant rights orgs, labor orgs, and community health and you are, in fact, building solidarity.

FastCompany: “On TeslaTakedown.com, citizens are planning protests at Tesla locations across the country (and world) in hopes of tying negative sentiment about CEO Elon Musk’s DOGE activities to the company’s stock price.” www.fastcompany.com/91279578/tes...

JD Vance now defending free speech as base of democracy when Musk is attacking judges and the rule of law at home and in Europe. We're living in dystopia. #MSC2025

I have a feeling Zelensky knows what he's talking about.

“I always thought that the US-German relationship was the exception to the rule of ‘countries have no friends, they have interests’”* - reason why Vance’s speech yesterday in Munich hit so hard. *Overheard at #MSC2025

"I am not the world's most important and famous deal maker," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius just said in Munich. "But if I were, I would know that I don't take any essential point of negotiations off the table before the negotiations begin." #MSC2025

Neither wishing to take the blame if talks fail, it feels like the FPÖ and ÖVP are engaged in a contest to see who can push the other one away from the negotiating table.

It's controversial to even _talk_ about solar radiation modification/management. But we're going to need to have these conversations.

The news getting you down? I invite you to stare at this chart of solar and wind deployed capacity in China. They blew past their ambitious 2030 target... last July.

This is really shameful. #Raiffeisen should finally cut its losses and finally get out of there. This has been going on way too long. #RBI

Something that I think we can all agree on is that the current generation of Democratic leadership is simply not optimized for the Attention Age. Not really their fault! And honestly, they may be better people for it, but it's a pretty pressing political problem.

No biggie, just >2 million dead Europeans this century due to climate change. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

larger electric vehicles require much more embodied carbon (+ water) to manufacture, and the amount of energy needed to power them is also greater (the production of that energy also has associated embodied carbon) smaller cars = less consumption as with housing - the sufficiency principle applies

The biggest thing to take away from this is the fact that these people live in another reality more or less completely unmoored from the real world. I’m not sure how you fix this.

It is both the case that the 2% of the planet that is it United States is remarkably frigid at the moment, and that the world as a whole is at record-warm levels for this day of the year:

Hollywood mourns the loss of David Lynch. What better way to honor the visionary director than with a watchfest of some of his greatest work? arstechnica.com/culture/2025...

You know who understands risk? Actuaries. And guess what they're saying: "... the plausible worst-case hit to global economies would be 50% in the two decades before 2090." I'm bad at budgeting, can someone tell me whether 50% is a lot?

I love sentences where you never know what’s coming two words ahead but you know it’s going to be 10% more insane

“the major threat to the security and prosperity of the West today emanates from its own dire social instability, structural and economic decline, cultural desiccation and, in my view, elite pusillanimity” I just learned new words. Oh, and I’m worried www.militarystrategymagazine.com/article/civi...
