Coming around to the view that a certain kind of narcissist simply needs Musk to be a genius rather than a fraud, because they want to believe there’s a hereditary Brahmin class of accomplished, beautiful minds—and that they’re a part of that class.

BBC News on hour reporting straight that Trump has got rid of military chiefs because ‘they’re too mired in woke culture’ 🤯🤯🤯 Traditional liberal democratic media still hasn’t learned how to report on authoritarians, even now when it’s almost too late

The US is in a dark, dark place. Those of us who said this was the direction of travel ahead of November 2024 were traduced and dismissed as cranks. Never wished I was a crank more

I’d like to think I’m the first person to get into a flame war with VPOTUS from the swimming pool of Woburn Center Parcs at half-term.

Been off on half term for the last few days but would really recommend reading this piece now given what’s happening

Here's an interview with me on Peter Geoghegan's substack Democracy for Sale! democracyforsale.substack.com/p/the-poster...

Margate in the winter sun. Really lovely

Important reading from @petergeoghegan.bsky.social! ”Cruelty is a hallmark of this government and their targeted harm to vulnerable people is outrageous. It’s important to pay attention to, lift up and help those who suffer from this government’s cruelty.”

"Democracy will not go down without a fight" @kimlanelaw.bsky.social explains Trump’s power grab and what can be done to stop the destruction of American democracy in latest Democracy for Sale Highly recommended reading this in full democracyforsale.substack.com/p/the-poster...

Imagine writing a sentence as tortured as this just to say “Nazis support other Nazis”

Yes, highly recommended but alas no magic solutions; sigh.

This is very good indeed.

Excellent analysis. Great clarity and insight into what is happening.

Well worth your time.

This is such an important and helpful read. I want to keep up with what’s going on but feeling so overwhelmed and want to switch off. I know I mustn’t, so I like the concept of categorising the many different actions into 3 buckets and priorities to aid understanding.

Yeah this is exactly what I mean. Like Chinese is gonna do *very* well out of green energy now. Which US had huge competitive advantage in but that’s dead in the water now

There is a world in which the US loses its hegemonic position really quickly It’s made a *huge* bet on AI, which looks a lot shakier post Deepseek, and it’s systematically destroying all its alliances If tariffs do happen, will be inflationary to at least some degree Perfect storm?

More watch what’s happening in US/Trumpland, more feels imperative to understand Putin’s rise to power, how he used Russia’s oligarchs to consolidate power - and what happens you cross him Reviewed two new books on that theme for latest @thetls.bsky.social www.the-tls.co.uk/politics-soc...

Curbing the power of billionaires to influence politics is a vote winner. It’s also free. Why won’t Labour commit? ✍🏼 @petergeoghegan.bsky.social www.prospectmagazine...

🧵 There are legitimate points to be made on the threshold and level of inheritance tax relief for farms and decent campaigns making them. Farmers to Action does not seem to me to be one such campaign. Everything about them rings alarm bells. Not least of which their association with #together. 1/3

At event on UK’s role in enabling kleptocracy, at the Frontline Club. The reputation managers, the legal firms, the PRs.

Delighted to be speaking about the myriad problems in Britain’s election law among some very august company at Landmark chambers now.

SO proud to have supported @financialtimes.com's Democracy 2024 series, produced by the brilliant @julietriddell.bsky.social, now nominated for the RTS Journalism Award ❤️ Comes on the back of a slew of other nominations & awards for these beautiful films from women around the world: osf.to/3Q60KDe

SCOOP: We've learned at least three individuals closely associated with Palantir or its cofounder Peter Thiel were involved in an online recruiting effort for DOGE late last year. Step inside the recruitment effort that helped build Elon's DOGE army:

I realise I’m tooting my own horn but please can the Labour insiders briefing the Guardian that they are following Trump’s genius disruption model read my wee Substack post about the limits of that. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Really enjoyed speaking to @disordershow.bsky.social about dirty money in politics

What a game. Orient very unlucky at the end but played incredibly well. Amazing atmosphere too

Never thought I’d be at a Leyton Orient match singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ at Pep. Class

Don’t normally see Match of the Day being broadcast live from Leyton Orient! Come on the O’s!

A useful interview with @petergeoghegan.bsky.social on the problems caused by loose rules on political donations. Nearly everything said about the UK applies in Aotearoa too. podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/d...
