A reminder that dotted lines on a map do not prevent ocean acidification or rising sea temperatures. Australia’s marine parks are being destroyed by policies that promote more fossil fuel pollution until 2070. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

We're meeting today to kick off our new NERC-funded project on the 'Impacts of bottom trawling on seabed carbon storage'. It's a consortium project to establish how the disturbance associated with bottom trawling modifies C storage, cycling and air/sea CO2 fluxes. gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref...

observer.co.uk/news/oceans/... This 'new policy' looks like a re-announcement of a policy initiative first announced over 10 years ago? "Stage 3 covers the remaining impacts of fishing on the 41 MPAs with seabed features not already covered in Stage 1 or Stage 2" www.gov.uk/government/c...

More than a national scandal, it's verging on corruption by senior civil servants who have allowed Regulatory Capture by big fishing trade bodies. Time for a full independent Inquiry. Happy to provide reams of evidence. @johnswinney.bsky.social @mairigougeon.bsky.social www.itv.com/news/2025-05...

Heartbreaking and terrifying www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Fact-check: It is not demographically possible to regrow billions of dead adult corals from teaspoons of frozen sperm. “Eggs contain too much water and fat to be frozen without damage” iol.co.za/ios/world/20...

Today we welcome the release of the Environmental Audit Committee’s (EAC) report on how the UK Government manages our marine environment. Ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, the report makes it clear that protecting the marine environment is essential.

Another concerning consequence of human activities on our oceans....

Stop clutching at distracting tokenistic straws that are perversely intended to lull people into a false sense of security and accept that tropical coral reefs only have a future if we rapidly transition towards decarbonising our economies and lifestyles

Another claimed #carboncapture scheme that is being sold as credits to justify #businessasusual but won't work

📣 New report and film Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and overfishing in Senegal are devastating fish populations and coastal communities, leading to increased forced migration to Europe across the world’s most deadly migration route. Hear their stories 🎬

This rant certainly puts things into perspective

11 years ago today @richardlochhead.bsky.social called a Clyde Fishery/Ecosystem Summit. 97% of delegated agreed fisheries measures were needed to recover the fishery. BUT THE 3% who were content with the Prawn status quo prevailed. @mairigougeon.bsky.social

#climatecrisis has tripled length of deadly ocean heatwaves, study reveals - Hotter seas supercharge storms and destroy critical ecosystems such as kelp forests and coral reefs Story by me www.theguardian.com/environment/...

It would be funny if it wasn't a plot that many people actually believe....

I stand with Greenpeace ✊🌍 What a total injustice. Big Oil deploying bullying litigation tactics to silence environmental activists. A jury made up of multiple individuals linked to the oil industry. A complete sham & set up.

Coral reefs in #Ningaloo Marine Park are bleaching badly again, just 3 years after the last bleaching. These events will slowly degrade the reefs, leading to their demise www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

The UK Government went against scientific advice when it set maximum fishing quotas for 2024. @Bluemarinef.bsky.social is bringing legal action against Defra, saying it acted contrary to its commitments to protect the UK’s marine environment 👏 www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crim...

Crowds are massive in Silver Spring, Maryland…the home of NOAA. People chanting, “Save NOAA Now!” and “We will not weather the storm.” Make your voices heard and keep it up. #NOAA #NWS Severe Weather is on its Way. And so is hurricane season. 🌀 🧪

. You should DEFINITELY NOT go to this site & mess with this DOGE survey by the Heritage Foundation. Definitely do NOT put fake information where they ask for your personal details. That would fuck up all their shit, man. These people are doing SERIOUS WORK. secured.heritage.org/the-heritage...

Kelp forests used to be abundant in Sussex-in the early 1980s dense kelp forests were prolific in Sussex waters. By 2019 only 4% of kelp forests remained, destroyed by trawling (and the great storm of 1987). SKRP works to recover our lost kelp forests and marine habitats. 📸David Nicholls of Worthing
