New preprint! Deacon is a versatile tool for filtering FASTA/FASTQ files and streams at hundreds of megabases per second using minimizers, built with rapid metagenomic host depletion in mind, but equally useful for search. github.com/bede/deacon

Excited to share our new paper in Molecular Ecology! Using whole-genome and morphological data from silvereyes, we explore their evolutionary history and find that water barriers are more effective than continental distances in driving population divergence 🐤🧬 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Final days to register join us, the @linneansociety.bsky.social and our wonderful panelists for a discussion on how increasingly politicised media is affecting biodiversity conservation! Thursday, June 12 at 18:00 BST, Burlington House, London Register: tinyurl.com/e8e4p5zt

I'm thinking of organising a meeting on endogenous viral elements (RNA, DNA and retroviral) - if you'd potentially be interested, please fill out the form here - forms.gle/wrCiWMw4yXZe... - so I can gauge interest. Please RT or share with anyone maybe interested! 🧪🧬🖥️🦠 #virology #bioinformatics

Experimental embryology postdoc available in my lab at the @biology.ox.ac.uk @ox.ac.uk working on the evolution of vertebral counts. Reach out if you’re passionate about EvoDevo, enjoy lab work and microscopy and are into or could get into cichlid fishes. Deadline on the 16th June. Please share!

In a time of increasingly polarised discourse, join us (@systassn.bsky.social and @linneansociety.bsky.social) for an in-person evening debate on the effects of misinformation on conservation efforts! When: Thurs, June 12 at 18:00 BST Where: Burlington House, London How: tinyurl.com/e8e4p5zt

Excited to announce my second PhD manuscript is on bioRvix (biorxiv.org/content/10.1...). Thanks to all co-authors, including my supervisors @bertaverd.bsky.social and Roger Benson. Thread below...

Ponds are vital freshwater habitats which support a disproportionally high level of biodiversity but we’ve lost too many over time. Making a pond is a great way to bring more messy habitat into your garden or park! 🪲🐸🦆

Coming soon from @systassn.bsky.social: "The New Taxonomy: A Science Reimagined", edited by David Williams & Quentin Wheeler Stems from a symposium held at the 2024 SystAss biennial in Reading. I contributed a chapter: "Bringing taxonomy back into the spotlight" www.routledge.com/The-New-Taxo...

Don't miss this opportunity and register! Deadline is approaching for this unique event. Please, spread the word and share! 👇

And that's a wrap on the SystAssn-SRUK/CERU Bayesian Phylogenetics Workshop! Thank you to all the attendees, instructors (@anaserrasilva.bsky.social, @sabifo4.bsky.social, Tomas Flouri and Yuttapong Thawornwattana) and to our wonderful TA @lauramulvey.bsky.social!

The first joint @systassn.bsky.social and SRUK/CERU Bayesian Phylogenetics Workshop is underway!

Now published!!!! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A lot of what looks like microbial engraftment after FMT might actually be noise. Using placebo sequencing and culture-enriched metagenomics, we sort signal from noise. Our latest from the Surette lab: www.nature.com/articles/s41... @surettem.bsky.social @mcmasteruniversity.bsky.social

Another new species for #InverteFest, a carnivorous, cannibalistic caterpillar that wears a suit of the corpses of their prey, meticulously stitched together. Yeah, you read that right. www.sciencefocus.com/news/bone-co...

It's publication day of my first book: The Tree of Life. The tree of life is a time machine that can take us back 4 billion years to meet our most distant ancestor. It is the magic that lets us tell the origin stories, beginning with this ancient relative, of everything from mushrooms to man.

Delighted to have been awarded a BBSRC Fellowship to look at the genetics of how insects have adapted to living in freshwater habitats 🧬🦋🪰🪲🌊 Extremely grateful to all who have supported me over the years and excited to be at Liverpool with some great colleagues! www.ukri.org/news/9-milli...

Good news for bee-flies! They have been reported much more frequently this year, and in mid-April we have already had more 2025 records than we did for the whole of 2024, for both Dark-edged and Dotted Bee-flies. This is likely to be due to the much sunnier weather this year. #BeeFlyWatch 1/4

The website for our EMBO workshop is live now. Don't miss this opportunity to join us in a meeting that aims gathering all experts working on multicellularity. We will welcome you in the nice Barcelona in October! @multicellgenome.bsky.social @prbb.org @embo.org meetings.embo.org/event/25-mul...

The UK Supreme Court can rule whatever it likes about whether trans women are legally women or not. The law will eventually change and equality will prevail. Fuck this government and its alignment with such hate.

Awesome new paper by @lucalivraghi.bsky.social et al. doi.org/10.1016/j.cu... in @currentbiology.bsky.social on the evo-devo of a butterfly color variation enjoy the show!

(1/4) In its first year, #ProjectPsyche has engaged with the research community by creating networks with experts in moths and butterflies 🦋 Members of the project have also trained the research community in #GenomeCuration, a key step in the generation of genomes 🧬

Really excited to say that my lab's paper on color transitions in Mimulus sect. Erythranthe is out! We found that some traits demonstrate evolutionary convergence in phenotype & genotype, while others are divergent, & that - as Bob Vickery found - bees prefer yellow! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Hi there, my student is making a survey about the use of R packages in Ecology, could you please spend two mins on filling it 🥹 Very appreciated! And if you could spread it further (RT), that would be just awesome. ❤️ docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Day 3: #CouchTo10IrishSpringBees Sexual dimorphism is when the sexes of the same species have different morphological characteristics as highlighted perfectly in Andrena clarkella, below. Would you think they were the same species? Have you spotted any spring bees yet? Share your photos...

We've still got some spots open for our in-person Bayesian phylogenetics workshop! Deadline is tomorrow, Friday 14th at 17:00 GMT+0 Register! systass.org/workshop-bay...

Who wants to play, "Couch to 10 Irish Spring Bees"? Starting with a beautiful queen Buff-tailed Bumblebee. Check out the image below for how to identify these in the field. Do engage and let me know if you find these useful.

A woman studies embryos for decades, struggles for funding and respect. She publishes under her husband’s name, until they divorce. A single mother, she moves across an ocean to continue her studies. It all sounds quite modern, until you learn that she also worried she’d be burned as a witch. 🧵 1/15
