Report: Majority Of Nation’s Civic Engagement Centered Around Oppressing Other People theonion.com/report-...

Trump tried to bury this story on a Friday night, but it’s extremely important: He’s planning to take land on the border controlled by the Dept. of Interior and sign it over to Dept. of Defense so migrants “would have trespassed on a military installation,” resulting in harsher punishment.

Panicked SocSec staffers: “If bad actors have access to this database, they could essentially erase people and destroy their lives.” The Trump Administration: “Wait, really?” wapo.st/3RKSQQt

The Trump White House is now sitting on any reporters’ pool reports it finds unflattering

My latest for The Atlantic: an excellent TV show based on the best video games I’ve ever played. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

The most interesting exchange: Rufo says his activism was launched by the “death” (not murder) of George Floyd, which allowed the leftists in the academy to inject their ideology into the public. Barbaro: Would you agree some of the response was organic? Rufo: Well, sure. Cancer is organic.

“Well, Dr Franklin, what do we have, a republic or a monarchy?” “A republic… I think… wait… let me refresh my feed again…”

The eye of the anti-trans movement has fallen on a school near me, which a relative attends. The community is coming out to defend it and its students.

Not only is he lying about the studies being "narrow" or "invalid," he's also lying about them not comparing the vaccinated to unvaccinated. See Don McNeil's summary of the science, here: www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

I felt compelled to write about Trump’s attack on Chris Krebs, one of the most (though not the most) authoritarian steps that Trump has taken. Gift link: wapo.st/3RHcnBk

Good news, everyone! The worst are full of passionate intensity!

The worst thing: when he just says “51 intelligence officers” without context I know what he’s talking about, why he thinks it means the election was rigged, and why it doesn’t. I need to get outside more.

It's #NationalLibraryWeek! And there ARE easy things you can do to help the world be better. #1, right now, GET A LIBRARY CARD. Even if you don't think you'll use it. Check out LIBBY and HOOPLA that let you borrow ebooks, audiobooks and magazines!! You don't even have to go into the library...

I would add to Philip's analysis that this nostalgia for a time people aren't old enough to remember is also driven by pop-culture, both the instant availability of old movies/TV shows from when all heroes were White Men, and misreading of newer movies (eg "Wall Street") as paeans to manly virtue.

I will be honest: I could not believe the WH press secretary herself used the phrase "bend the knee" but she did. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/u...

Superb interview w/ Princeton president Chris Eisgruber - a model of resistance that is thoughtful, clear-eyed, but adamant of ultimate lines to draw -- applies for all univ and law and media too. This is the core of the showdown. One Trump thinks he can fix with his sharpie. We shall see. U.S.-China Brawl Takes Center Stage in Global Trade War A 20-year trade imbalance between the two economies is at the center of Trump’s tariff battle www.wsj.com/economy/trad...

In Maggie Haberman’s excellent bio of Trump, “Confidence Man,” Trump is introduced at the age of 5 throwing rocks at a baby in a playpen.

Sterling K Brown being denounced by an evil cult leader.

"Alfredo Orellana, 31, was not just a caregiver for Luke Ferris," an autistic 28yo. "The pair worked out at the gym, got tacos and played video games together... Then suddenly, after 4 years, Orellana, who goes by Alex, was gone, locked up in an immigration detention center nearly 2,000 miles away."

I appreciate these economists explaining why this is all nonsense, but I think they need to swear more. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/b...

One of two things is happening. They don’t understand what’s happening. They want it to happen. Pick your poison

Another excellent, if slightly niche, aptonym for @geneweingarten.bsky.social's collection: The head of Nintendo America is named Doug Bowser. www.postguam.com/lifestyle/wo...

1/2 Now that I've finished it, I want to recommend to you "The Siren's Call" by @chrislhayes.bsky.social. It's not a screed, not a guilt trip, not a collection of hot takes, but a deeply researched and even sympathetic look at our addictions to scrolling and distraction.

It’s #NationalLibraryWeek, so continuing to share this piece where librarians spoke about the impact of threats to library resources—and how the services, programming, and support libraries provide to communities is essential. I hope you’ll read what they shared:

In other economic news: The five U.S. airports with the most international traffic have seen an obvious slide in international passengers, maybe because people are being snatched and sent to gulags. s2.washingtonpost.com/camp-rw/?tra...
