Gonna be quality, this, like everything Robin does. One of The Good Guys.

Saw Omar El-Akkad talking about his book One Day, Everyone Will Always Have Been Against This - how horrendous to hear about so many of the unreported atrocities, deliberate targeting of journalists, a little girl having her have blown off by a beeper - we see so little of the whole story

DOGE is now dismantling the Department of Education - check out my article if you haven't already on the wider agenda here 👇

Could it happen here? Could a Trump tribute act smash codes, conventions and laws in the UK? All too easily, I suspect. My column www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/dem...

President Trump said the US will measure success in part by "the wars we never get into," but he promptly lifted a pause on 2,000-pound bomb shipments to the Israeli government. The US will be complicit in the Israeli government’s abuses in Gaza so long as it provides arms and other military aid.

Labour will never out-Farage Farage. Across Europe, centrist parties have adopted right-wing narratives and policies. This has only strengthened the far-right. They set the agenda. They win the ideological battle. In the end, voters prefer the original not the copy.

By some fluke I was sent to teach at Salamabi Girls' in Gedaref in 1977, an oddity for a white male. It turned me into a local celebrity on a par with Robert Redford. I owe a lot to those girls for the insights they gave me into women's lives in Sudan. And I'm sure they had fun at my expense, too.

I'm seeing non-Sudanese on here say they don't know where to get daily news reports on Sudan - Sudanese outlets that also report in English include: Radio Dabanga, Ayin Network, and Sudan Tribune (links: www.dabangasudan.org/en, 3ayin.com/en/, sudantribune.com). 1/

I do love a good Venn diagram. And a concept neatly identified in another language.

Labour paid £80k to have the Tory blue removed from the Downing Street briefing room which he used today. I know it wasn't to remove the Tory branding though, it was coz every time a PM briefed from there people like me added flaming wasteland backdrops....

Authorities in South Sudan have ordered internet service providers to block access to to all social media sites effective today- for a minimum of 30 days. Cite “recent upheaval in Sudan” which has exposed the South Sudanese population to violence “through social media posts”.

Please repost the [bleep] out of this 🧵. Trump's nasty, dangerous EO targeting trans individuals in federal prison even removes anti-rape protections. 🤬

Pin this, save it, we’ll need it. “When a prison camp opens in your town…when a DREAMer is disappeared from your classroom…when the President destroys what’s left of the Constitution…They will all say they didn’t know this was coming. And I want the American people to know that they did.” AOC 🔥🎯

I keep seeing Darfuri teenage asylum seekers whose ages have been disputed by the UK authorities. It starts with the adultification of black boys -typically seen as in their 20s when only 16-17- on entry. When it's endorsed by assessors too deferential or clueless to stand up for them, it's tragic.

OK, my job is often to bridge gaps in people's knowledge of Sudan (and Islam), so it comes with the territory. But tackling some of the ignorance can sometimes feel like explaining why water is wet. I could go into sub-molecular forces, or go empirical and just throw a bucket of water over them.

I'm atheist, but I'm pretty sure this is what real Christianity looks like: standing in front of the devil and explaining the quality of mercy.

Thinking today of Eve Kosofky Sedgwick’s reminder that we spend too much identifying poison and not enough time seeking nourishment - find voices today that nourish and inspire

There is so much dangerous rubbish being spouted about today's news over on the other place and most of it should just be ignored. But when people of influence who until recently held political office come out with this nonsense, it should be called out www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpo...

The amazing Donald Jumbo VanRenen kitted me out with music to DJ in Sudan - and in Geneva (February 84). Flyer below. Nicky Tesco of the Members later told me he was visiting Jumbo's place in Oxford Gardens around the same time as me. Both sadly missed.

Good morning lovely phone family. It's ironic that today happens to be Blue Monday and MLK Jr Day, as a criminal takes one of the most powerful positions in the world. Standing in peace, love and solidarity with everyone who needs it right now 🫂 Take care of yourselves ❤️ #HaveCourageAndBeKind

Doom loops, rage, hopelessness... We may not be able to change what the next few years bring, but we can choose to hold on to an integrity within ourselves – recognising that humanness & life is complicated & conflicting, and we are living through phenomenal change. My editorial on Trump's return 👇

In 1974 Brian Eno gave a talk at York University, one of his earliest. He spoke of the value of the "small, mobile, intelligent unit" and played "What Goes On" by the Velvet Underground. I recalled the magic of the latter when recording Sudanese electric musicians in Gedaref a few years later.

"Tape everything" - Studs Terkel, seen here with the wonderful Kitchen Sisters.

Brilliant film. What Phil Cox and Daoud Hari went through - and managed to capture on video - is especially resonant for me. Thinking how lucky I was to have my hassles in Darfur in more innocent times (even if it didn't seem that way to us in 1985-86). www.nativevoicefilms.com/project/capt...

Drone attack on Merowe dam power station attributed to Rapid Support Force. sudantribune.com/article295881/

A stirring of hope with the news of Sudan Armed Forces pushing the Rapid Support Force out of Wad Madani. Celebrations from as far afield as Dilling and Port Sudan. (But with SAF blocking humanitarian aid and bombing civilians elsewhere, still plenty to be concerned about their attitude, too.)
