genuine problem

Great catch up with old Melbourne Institute friends last night in Carlton!

The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better. All three statements are true at the same time. Understanding this is key to solving big global problems. We believe data & research can help us understand both the problems we face & the progress that’s possible. 🧵

The Prime Minister has recommitted to the 18-week waiting time target for NHS elective care. This is a mistake. It avoids the necessary discussion on *prioritising* between different treatments and patients with different levels of need. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cr...

Awesome new paper from some of my old mates in Australia showing how the roll out of Sky News Australia increased votes for conservative parties: docs.iza.org/dp17452.pdf#...

Kemi Badenoch at PMQs on Louise Haigh: “we need conviction politicians, not politicians with convictions.” Keir Starmer: “two of her predecessors had convictions” (reference to the Covid party fixed penalty notices for Johnson & Sunak)

"tries" to make nerdy cool.. thanks blueskyroast.com

A remarkable stat: Heidi Alexander’s appointment as Transport Secretary means the cabinet is now 100% state-educated for the first time in history.

Interesting comments on the assisted dying bill from Thea Stein at the Nuffield trust. I actually disagree with her comments that the bill needs to answer all relevant questions on how the service is paid for, training issues etc.

Great stuff, on the history of GLP-1 agonists "Stephen Bloom of Hammersmith Hospital in the UK injected GLP-1 directly into the brain of fasting rats, observed profound reduction in food intake, and called out GLP-1 as a neurotransmitter."

One of my biggest recommendations for academics who are just starting out writing for a lay audience - avoid acronyms. AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE. I know writing things out can be tiresome. But 99% of the world has no idea what you're talking about when you use acronyms, and that's bad.

Having experienced the challenge of finding the UK health / NHS policy community here on Bluesky, I've created a starter pack so you can easily follow some key voices right away. Please comment with suggested additions as more people join. go.bsky.app/NEVJUbU

Good morning! If you've found my 'UK news and politics' starter pack useful to get you up and running on @bsky.app, please spread the word to new users by giving this a repost. Cheers! go.bsky.app/VNsC9bL

Great visit to the Royal College of Surgeons to talk about surgical hubs evaluation yesterday (www. measure-study.org). Trying to explain staggered diff-in-diff literature to the nations top surgeons was an interesting challenge 😳.

Some big news this morning www.theguardian.com/media/2024/n...

NEW: Is NHS hospital productivity starting to rebound? Over the last few years, @benzaranko.bsky.social and I have written and talked a lot about the NHS productivity problem. In a new @theifs.bsky.social comment (with new colleague Olly Harvey-Rich) we look at productivity over the last year. 1/12

Some positive NHS news! It looks as though hospital productivity in England is (finally) starting to recover. There’s still some way to go to get productivity back to pre-pandemic levels, and the NHS is still behind on its backlog recovery plan – but it's now heading in the right direction.

Going to try and use Bluesky a bit and move away from the dreaded Musk-site. Anyway, anyone want to read about whether Rachel Reeves budget will fix the NHS? theconversation.com/forty-thousa...

Today: 💫 Paper accepted 📝 💫 New data access approved 🔢 💫 Bought Christmas tree 🎄 💫 Ate burger and chips for lunch 🍔 A good day!

🚨PhD opportunity🚨: Join me at SUPSI for an exciting SNSF-funded project looking at welfare & equity at the intersection of primary care, emergency care, and health insurance choices. The project involves collaborations with: Uni of Manchester, CSS Institute & EOC. Deadline: 29/02/2024, Details ⬇

Do all important people (CEOs/politicians etc) just have meetings all day? This seems the default above some level of seniority but can't be optimal. Meetings involve so much wasted time and there must be a better way for executives to spend time?
