Unfriending people on FB that I have known for over a decade, because they are siding with a murderous tyrant against a besieged nation that's heroically doing its best to defend its own territory. Most of them American evangelicals. As an evangelical myself, I'm full of grief and shame.

One of the most depressing days of my life. American leadership bullying a president of a country desperately trying to defend itself for not giving into the aggressor, and giving its natural resources in exchange for nothing. I can’t believe American Christians voted for this monstrosity.

If a German uni wants to hire a WMA part-time and their work is construed as wfh, then they should allow an EU citizen to have a legal address in his country of residence. What makes this such a hard concept to grasp? Asking for a friend.

If you couldn't attend, here is the recording of the first TeTra Lecture of 2025, delivered by Willy Clarysse: "Remnants of Christian books from the second to the eight centuries" www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQux...

Perhaps it's because I'm generally a slow learner, but for the life of me I don't get why anyone would ever want to use author-date system. What else does it achieve apart from saving on word count?

(1/11) URGENT: York University @YorkUniversity has suspended admissions to Religious Studies. This is a backdoor tactic to shut down the program without due process. This will ultimately be bad for York and everyone. #YUGOOD --we aren't.

This may come across as controversial among New Testament textual critics, but the more I work with comparatively meagrer textual traditions, the more I’m convinced that a good conjecture is an essential part of a philologist’s toolbox. Use with moderation and be merry!

Gotta love how picturesquely an efficient Greek scribe can abbreviate “sun and moon” in a marginal gloss.

For 3 years now an unprovoked, genocidal war has been raging in Ukraine. May the Lord grant this land and its people lasting, just peace and may the rest of us in the comfort of our Western homes do nothing but stand by them in prayer, word of encouragement and deed of support. Slava Ukraini!

“When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn't become a king. The palace becomes a circus” (a Turkish proverb).

At last, I’ve got round to deactivate my Twitter account.

This is the least of the world's worries right now, but I'm wondering how the impending US/Europe divorce will affect scholarship, esp conferences and research travel. Should we as European scholars devote so much money, time and energy to transatlantic travel for things like SBL? Not so sure tbh.

In this terrible political climate, I found a lot of comfort in Luke 18.7-8 this morning. I hope you do too.

Note (not only) to self: only apply Genette's categories if you understand them first.

This looks excellent, congratulations Sabrina and the team!!!

Trying to keep this account as work-focused as I can, but, gosh, today is a very depressing day to follow politics. Trump and Putin deciding on the future of an independent, democratic nation. If this doesn't give you 1930s vibes, I don't know what will.

Just reviewed a brilliant text-critical submission for a East-Central European journal, written in a Slavic language. The author exhibited a far better understanding of the CBGM than some English-speaking big-shots have ever managed to do. Fantastic day in the office!

Nothing more exhilarating than having to curb your classes the first week of the semester because 3/4 of your fam is sick and you’re losing the ability to speak. On the plus side, I’ll get extra research time!

OK, another thing off my plate before the semester hits me with all severity.

You must be utterly sick in the head to be saving transcription of illegible marginal glosses as a reward for completing a more boring task at work, Pete.

I must confess I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state. With Canadian electorate in the mix, the GOP would *never* win in any of the elections. Annex Canada, and have the King reclaim his rightful territories within a decade! Make the Commonwealth great again!

Editing scholia be like...

I find it odd but amusing that, over the years, those articles of mine that I consider strongest and/or most significant don’t get nearly as many citations as those I’d consider fine but a bit ‘blah’. Is it just me?

In the not so near future, I’d like to offer a uni-wide course on Jesus films, just to have some fun. If you have any suggestions about films I shouldn’t miss or ideas for presenting and/or discussing this material, please feel free to bring to share them with me—I’d be most grateful!

Expect a Novum Testamentum article on text-types in Revelation (or lack thereof) by yours truly and Darius Müller in your morning post later this year!
