Many neuroscience students are steeped in an experiment-first style of thinking that leads to “random walk science.” Let’s not forget how theory can guide experiments towards deeper insights, writes @gershbrain.bsky.social. #neuroskyence www.thetransmitter.org/theoretical-...

Béla Novák after John Reinitz … we are losing the Systems Biology pioneers, right when mathematical modeling of biological systems is more needed and necessary than ever.

Still hard to believe but Béla Novák died suddenly on Saturday. We've lost a fantastic colleague, mentor & great friend to many. There was really no-one else like him. Working with him was so much fun & I owe him a lot. All my thoughts are with his family. www.merton.ox.ac.uk/news/remembe...

Montreal’s cycling network is really incredible. So simple, intuitive and safe. Every municipal decision maker should see and experience it.

I think people both within science and outside science don’t fully appreciate the miracle that were the Covid-19 vaccines. How much courage it took to get the sequence out, how much work had already gone into figuring out the best viral antigen and how best to present it. 1/

"Genes are... the easy part" @philipcball.bsky.social argues biologists need to embrace complexity from the start, rather than beginning with oversimplified "one gene, one trait" models +1 www.cell.com/cell-systems...

Of course one can not expect consistency, and it is a detail in the big picture, but it is very strange to bank so much on AI while cutting science (one of our best data generation processes). There really is a bubble mindset.

I'm rereading my book Serving The Reich with increasing dismay, even horror. This, for example. Broaden "European" to "Western" and I have to say that I am no longer as confident in this statement as I was in 2013. That frightens me.

Great article ! I am definitely going to re-use some quotes there !

🇺🇦❤️ Kyiv est magnifique ce soir d’hiver. N’oubliez pas l’Ukraine, restons solidaires. L’Ukraine est là, nous sommes là pour elle. Slava Ukraini ❤️

Best news of 2025 (so far). Of course, it is kind of ridiculous that this comes only now, but better late than never.

Bob Rae, ancien premier ministre de l’Ontario, aujourd’hui ambassadeur du Canada auprès des Nations unies.

I’m running the robot vacuum cleaner…half the fun is hearing it cry out for help and finding out what it’s choked on this time…this made me laugh, started to scoop it out and had to take a photo…

Do you want one of the most influential jobs in dev bio? Would you like to work with the best group of editors & publishing professionals in the business? Are you interested in leading the premier not for profit community focussed journal in the field? Come be Development's next Executive Editor

The anticipatory swiftness with which certain organizations go along with attacks on diversity and rewritings of history suggests that maybe some of the folks in power think that these are genuinely good changes.

Dans @ledevoir.com ce matin 💔

We are looking for a new Executive Editor on the journal, with @katherine-brown.bsky.social taking on a new role at @biologists.bsky.social. If you're an experienced editor with a love of developmental biology and its community, this could be the job for you. Full details in the link below.

The Biochemistry Department at Université de Montréal is looking for a new Assistant or Associate Professor in Cryo-Electron Microscopy! The job ad can be found here: www.affairesuniversitaires.ca/trouver-un-e...

This is the reason why I think AI for biology is more aspirational than practical. We do not really have a broad ‘computational’ view of biology (eg how and what does a developing embryo ‘compute’ ?). Those questions are along the most exciting to me !

“And to anyone out there who has the ability to mentor, encourage and support the next generation who will transform the world – make this your highest priority!” 🙌🏽🙌🏽

‘Chemists fought no battles for Jews,’ historian Helmut Maier has said.1 ‘They fought no battles for immigrants. They only fought … a battle for their professional interests.’

Il faudrait une version québécoise ! Mais cela a bien marché pour moi, d’autant plus que j’ai “parisianisé” certaines de mes réponses (ma vraie origine est un peu plus au Nord)

As if I needed more reason to rage against AI summaries in google searches. 🤬 @coronin.bsky.social

We just received this message from the APS CEO who has never been ‘partisan’ but ‘100 % physics’. I suspect this will not fly well and that many people are more on @carlbergstrom.com ‘s line below.

Shocking: a pioneer in quantitative developmental biology passed... one of my all-time heroes! He had a dominant influence on many in the early 2000s when this field started to take off. What a loss! Obituary written by two of his former students: biologicalsciences.uchicago.edu/news/john-re...

Just learnt about the passing of John Reinitz. I never met him, he was/is very influential on systems biology, I am actually reading many of his papers those days. biologicalsciences.uchicago.edu/news/john-re...

A very timely piece from our sister journal, given current events in the USA - where, sadly, it might be hard to action some of the suggestions made here…

Job Alert! We are recruiting a postdoc for organoid technology at RIKEN BDR, Japan. This is a valuable opportunity to work in collaboration with multiple labs, aiming for an advanced integration of developmental biology and engineering. Please contact! www.riken.jp/en/careers/r...

Again, this isn't funny & it would have immediately ended any previous presidency in the post-WWII era. It's a direct violation of our NATO & UN obligations & obscene in a moment where 🇷🇺 is occupying 20% of 🇺🇦 & denying the sovereignty of another country. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

All this mess convinced me to further decrease my GAFAM addiction. What is the best alternative to gmail ? I really like the search feature, which I use regularly to fish out 1o y.o. emails. I am considering protonmail. Any other ideas ?

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks: "We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

Au moins, on est tous plus ou moins sur la meme ligne …

I wish Canadian tenured professors would stop saying "This would be a great opportunity for Canadian universities". Canadian universities are shedding existing staff at the moment. There's a crisis in Ontario universities.

I don’t have a definitive source on this yet but it looks like NSF review panels have been canceled. Sixty-some years ago, Eisenhower transformed higher education because he viewed a science education gap as the single greatest threat to national security. This is absolutely an act of sabotage.
