"The Union should never have started it." Donald Trump, 1863, offering his services to help mediate the Civil War.

Gained inspiration recently from reading @profmsinha.bsky.social's terrific The Rise and Fall of the 2nd American Republic, and today feeling same while reading early on in this book. Years of talking about him in class vindicated. Someone write a musical please: www.bookpage.com/reviews/man-...

Finally made time to listen to Thavolia Glymph’s @historians.org Presidential address from January, and … wow. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I’ve already added it to my AfAm family history syllabus this semester. Please take the time to watch/listen. youtu.be/FMYHnw41Zf4?...

I will never not miss Berkeley, part . . . whatever.

Hoping that Kendrick beefs with JD Vance next.

What would Seal do?

this weird faux NOLA street set for Tom Brady and the other play-by-play guy is seriously weird as f***

So far this game is so bad that maybe Kid Rock, Lee Greenwood, and Coldplay should be doing the halftime show.

Big big congratulations to @cambridgeup.bsky.social author Lesley Gordon, whose book is a finalist for the @gliamericanhistory.bsky.social Lincoln Prize! 🎉

Woke up to shocking news today. Yes, I'm talking about the Luka trade.

I was led to believe by R.E.M. that I would feel a lot better about this.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkui... Song recorded by someone I didn't know before but is quite the up-and-coming star it appears, in my hometown of Beaver, Oklahoma; @randalljstephens.bsky.social you'll appreciate this. Expresses sentiments exactly the opposite of those I had when I was younger LOL

A week for stress eating baguettes on the way home. I'm not sorry.

Bad news: today, meant to read an excellent new book, instead spent dealing with a million unnecessary bureaucratic snafus at my Uni. Total s-show. Good news: time taken away from obsessing about ongoing national s-show.

after this week of mierda, a little happiness from Bob Dylan and Susan Tedeschi: www.youtube.com/watch?v=41Zy...

I miss the days of desperation being quiet.

The fact that the musical genius Garth Hudson passed exactly this awful week seems darkly fitting. "It seems wrong, somehow, that they are all gone" -- www.newyorker.com/culture/post...

2024: "Well I sucked, didn't I?!" 2025: Hold my beer.

Other than that how is your week going? The Know-Nothing Party of the 1850s is rising up out of its grave to huzzah.

Your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery

For no reason just loaded up Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address into Canvas even though we're not getting to it until April in class.

Looking forward to "taking" my students to this upcoming religion and politics forum, organized by graduate students in the Religion Department at Stanford. Beats the boring stuff I had planned for class that day! 🤣Hoping that @kginlum.bsky.social will chime in with commentary as well at the forum.

Very sad news today that the great Peter Kolchin, author of _Unfree Labor: American Slavery and Russian Serfdom (1987)_ and more recently _Emancipation: The Abolition and Aftermath of American Slavery and Russian Serfdom_ has passed away. RIP to one of the greats. 🗃️

Class starts Tuesday and hoping to avoid any rapid unscheduled disassembly scenarios until its inevitable annual advent early/mid April.

Like a moron I repeated my 2024 mistake of reading one of those NYT articles interviewing a focus group of Trump backers, in this case 12 men. I want those 5 minutes of my life back. But when asked to define a "real man," one said Jesus, and another said John Wayne. For you @kkdumez.bsky.social

Spent all morning dealing with administrative emails (including documenting "efficiency" data) -- still 10 days before semester begins. 0/10 do not recommend. #Chairlife
