Hooded mantis (Choeradodis stalii) feeding on a grasshopper in Ecuador. Viewed from above the mantis exhibits incredible camouflage to blend in with the surface of a broad leaf. But underneath the flattened body lies a killing machine, ready to strike at any passing insect!

Lost this amazing boy to cancer today. His name was Handsome Boy and he was about 12 years old. He was so good at what he did that he probably performed at 90% of our demo's throughout the 10 years or so that I was fortunate enough to work with him for. I'll miss him massively.

For my #Crustmas birthday, video from the shot below. Late larval stage of a mantis shrimp, one of the coolest things I've seen all year! 😍 We can see RGB colors but they have 33 opsin genes! They may be unable to discriminate those colors well and distinguish by polarized light 🧪🦑
