“Hog Butcher for the World,    Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,    Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler;    Stormy, husky, brawling,    City of the Big Shoulders” …and of the Pope.

“If through necessity or fear of a worse evil the workman accept harder conditions because an employer or contractor will afford him no better, he is made the victim of force and injustice.” —Pope Leo XIII, 1891

Amused that “The adventures of Uncle Sam, in search after his lost honor” the first use in literature of Uncle Sam, begins with, “What! another history of the war? We cannot always be reading” A perennial American theme.

I talked with Kev today. We talked of men and war—men who fought and men who died…It's good to talk with a friend who has shared the same experiences and hardships as you have. It is a good feeling—something too satisfying to present with man's feeble words. —James Harden Daugherty

TIL that these are two different songs, and not different parts of the same (pretty good) song.

“Across military Reddit forums and enlisted meme pages, Hegseth has become a regular target of satire, often referred to with nicknames such as "DUI Hire," "Whiskey Leaks" and "Kegseth."” www.military.com/daily-news/2...

“Morality became a type of game for the forces of corruption. Decency became a mere posture, a platitude and impossibility. The bad were now considered good in the name of spirit, and—an abomination—the good were considered bad because of their insecurity and confusion…

Over 350 faculty at Dartmouth (the only Ivy to abstain from signing letter against the Trump administration funding cuts) sign an open letter urging the administration to defend higher ed. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

As soon as it was invoked, @chamberlainvets.bsky.social said it and said it plainly - this was an egregious overreach of executive authority that undermines the rule of law and threatens the integrity of our democratic institutions. We will proudly continue to stand against threats to rule of law.

A few more days to apply to join @bridgingthegap.bsky.social at our New Era Workshop for PhD students in international affairs!

I think it’s good the NY Times is “platforming” influential right wing folks. Also, from Andreessen to Yarvin to that Lomez guy in the recent Douthat interview, my God they are really unimpressive

“I have documented serious cases of torture, including mock executions, all types of beatings, electricity being applied to ears and genitals and other parts of the body…Look, I’m calling this part of Russian war policy. It’s clear that it’s organized.” www.washingtonpost.com/world/intera...

Incredible stuff. CENTCOM public affairs covering itself in glory

“After reports of two major strikes against targets inside Yemen, officials at U.S. Central Command are refusing to discuss whether either action resulted in multiple civilian casualties or if either strike was militarily justified” www.military.com/daily-news/2...

I said this as a joke months ago and now lo and behold.

Stunning declines in favorable opinion of the United States among its closest allies since the election, with swings of 20% to 30% in major European nations, Japan, Korea and Australia. And most of this polling was done before Trump’s trade war! www.ipsos.com/en/americas-...

After adding today's new polls, Trump's approval rating has hit a new low of 43.6%, down from 49.4% on day one of his term. His new record-low net rating of -9.4 is now lower than his rating at this point in his first term. Worst-ever approval for a POTUS 100 days in. www.gelliottmorris.com/p/data

The logical end point of the GOP approvingly tweeting tough-looking Russian propaganda videos while the actual Russian military was failing is Hegseth, a media focused SECDEF who’d prioritize makeup rooms and hard guy workouts while failing at the actual wars we’re waging.

“Over nearly six weeks of US bombing, the Houthis’ ability and intent to keep lobbing missiles at US and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and at Israel is little changed, as is their command-and-control structure.” www.cnn.com/2025/04/25/p...

Israel’s military admitted on Thursday that its forces had attacked a UN guesthouse in Gaza with tank fire last month, killing a staff member. It was the second time in about a week that Israel has admitted that its forces wrongfully opened fire on aid workers in the Gaza Strip.

Do you think this is an ethical way of handling an interview subject’s request to go off the record for a bit?

“His vision for the church was neither progressive nor traditional — it was not primarily about ideology …(“We do not serve ideas, we serve people,” he would admonish ideologues.) Rather, his vision was about the structure of the church: Closeness, proximity was the goal.”

It’s a scandal than anyone voted to confirm him.

Hegseth should never have got within a million miles of running the Pentagon. He was inexperienced, unqualified & an extremist. His implosion is unsurprising. I have no expectation that his successor will be any better.

I doubt that I would have given this missive from Pope Francis my attention were it not for a steer from @bcdreyer.social, but I really can’t recommend it enough. www.vatican.va/content/fran...
