🧵 🥬 Lettuce begin! Super excited to share our new manuscript on contrasting patterns of evolution in sensor and helper NLRs in the NRC network! Tune in for some plant immunology and molecular evolution… 🌱🧬💻 (1/14) www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

🧪Join us on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, 16:00 CET (Prague) for our monthly #forest🍁#ecology seminar, MENDELU, Brno, CZ - "Spatial Ecology of Rotational and Continuous Cover Forestry in Boreal Landscapes" by Daniel Binkley, Colorado State Univ. Zoom link - excellentia.ldf.mendelu.cz/seminar-series.

Please spread the word - I am looking for a postdoc to join my lab at @osubpp.bsky.social to study diversity and interactions of plants and pathogens in wild and working landscapes! More information here: agsci-labs.oregonstate.edu/diseaseecolo...

Marine forests e.g. coral reefs, seaweed banks and seagrass meadows are biodiverse ecosystems, essential for a healthy ocean. However, they are disappearing at unprecedented rates. RESTORESEAS aims at improving marine forests' restoration in the Atlantic coasts. #marineforests

Very pleased to be able to say that this comprehensive (and surprising!) metabarcoding survey of Phytophthora communities in British plant nurseries is now in print at bsppjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... This was the work of a large consortium led by Sarah Green at Forest Research.

There are some discussions about critical situation in taxonomy - very few specialists for some groups of organisms, and none for some others. Sadly, the situation will continue to worsen. Particular causes - current funding policies in science + existing publishing bias. Some details below:

This will be a huge factor in tackling #biodiversityLoss at EU level: the #RestoreNature Law Plans will be crucial to showing Europe's ambition. @ec.europa.eu invites the stakeholders to give their thoughts! 👇 #EUHaveYourSay by 07.02 ⌛ europa.eu/!KmmwPw

New year, new paper! Now published in @nature.com. We identified and characterised diverse immune cell states in plants under pathogen attack. My postdoc work in the Ecker lab at @salkinstitute.bsky.social. A thread (0/n) #PlantScience www.nature.com/articles/s41...

JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN PLANT PATHOLOGY / GENOMICS We have extended the deadlines for the postdoctoral positions. Please apply by January 15! Note that experience with either genome or transcriptome data, preferably on a large scale, is a must for these positions.

Sad news. John McDowell has passed away. He was not only a brilliant scientist, he was one of the kindest people I have ever met. He worked hard, did a tremendous job in plant pathology and was a wonderful colleague. He is gone way too soon. www.mccoyfuneralhome.com/obituaries/J...

Wishing you delightful holidays and all the best for 2025…

Some pretty phytophthora from seagrass seeds for my Bluesky to make my day a little brighter (but also booo to pathogens!)

More opportunities! Besides a PhD student (other post) we are looking for postdocs! One on Quantitative Disease Resistance mechansims! One on Population Genomics of barley pathogens! The positions can start Feb 2025. For extremely well-fitting candidates can delay the date.

I want this: Genome-edited Chardonnay grapes resistant or tolerant to mildew & powdery mildew! Did you know that grapes are grown on only ~5% of European agricultural land, but account for ~2/3 of all fungicide sprayed in Europe? onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... #plantscience

Can a resistance gene from one crop protect another from the same pathogen? This generally only works if the crops are closely related. Now, Du et al. show a pepper 🌶 resistance gene can work in rice 🌾, so long as you deliver some associated genes! #plantimmunity www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

The majority of all known pathogens to global food production will thrive and reproduce faster in a warmer climate. A report from SMHI and SLU estimates how 80 known plant pathogens are affected by climate change. #climatechange #plantprotection #planthealth #plantpathogens

Transfer of both sensor and helper NLRs enables broad taxonomic functionality - from Solanaceae to soybean/rice/Arabidopsis. #plantimmunity #plantbiology www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

A good read, and it makes me wonder about alternatives to simply “papers” as a metric. How can we build a publishing/academic system that selects for robust progress in a field?

During the first year of our BIOPARQUE we have achieved our first objective. We wanted to find out if humans are vectors of forest pathogens and therefore, whether forest soils with more human activity in recreational areas are acting as reservoirs of putative forest pathogens.
