Yesterday my father left our family text group because we spoke the truth in love about what is currently happening with our federal government. We weren't harsh or rude, but we didn't adhere to the Fox News talking points. His response was to leave group chat. I've completely lost my parents. 💔

Tonight we went out with friends, had cathartic conversations, enjoyed some Laser Bowie at the planetarium, and got away from the state of things for a few hours. Thank goodness for the ones who care about others and haven't drunk the kool-aid!!!!

Today I've tried to focus on MLK's legacy. I've also tried to reconcile the boy who grew up seeing segregation and hatred entrenched in his community, the good man I knew my dad to be, and the MAGA supporter he's become. We can't let ourselves unlearn these important lessons...we just can't.

When MLK was assassinated, my dad was a college kid working the night desk at a hotel in Memphis. He heard the news, called his boss, and fearfully asked, "Should I lock the doors? Will there be rioting?" His boss replied, "You'll be fine. People are grieving the loss of a great man."

As a writer, I'm keenly aware it's not entirely up to me who my fictional characters are at their core - all I can do is breathe life and give them freedom to shape their stories. If it's difficult to force gender on a fictional character, just imagine the impossibility of doing so to a human being.
