So a question in Pike Jr.'s homework piqued my interest! It reads: What is a cartridge? - A big gun. - A really special pistol. - A contained with powder and bullet. Glad to see the school is teaching 8 year olds what they need to know! 🤣

FREE ARTICLE: Witness to War: Before the Storm, 1864 - Part I. I wanted to start a series of articles that focus on individual eyewitness accounts of war and conflict throughout the ages, and a recent find in the archives gave me a perfect subject for the first. open.substack.com/pub/nicolaie...

Todays article is up and this time it’s all about the change of heart Brits had to face in #WW1 when it came to the French… After nigh on 1000yrs at each others’ throats, how did the Poilu look… When one art-based publication set out to try and sell Britain’s new ally to the people in 1916?

We have just started uploading the many hundreds (several thousand) of our #MachineGunCorps postcards. We have more of these than many of the national collections combined so if you're interested in First World War imagery and history, head over to our Patreon and subscribe.

For those that have asked, yes, there is going to be an audio book - the bad news, you’ll have to put up with me telling the story. @pikegrey1418.bsky.social couldn’t have passed on it any faster if I had lobbed him the suggestion tied to a grenade with the pin pulled out… 😂

Finally got my hands on a complete set of the yearbooks of DSK (Danishminded Southern-Jutlandish War Participants) - a veterans organisation for Schleswig-Danes who'd served in the FWW in the German Army. These are basically all just accounts and recollections of the members.

Just tried to watching "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" - awful, just awful... awful history, awful story, awful cast, awful production and, worst of all, awful and blatant rip-off...

For those who've missed, I got a Substack now. A few upcoming topics: - Battle of Würzburg, 1945 - POWs in Denmark, WWI - Danes at Verdun, 1916-17 - Bombing of Bornholm, 1945 - 2nd Schleswig War, 1864 - Rheinberg, 1945 Anything else you'd like, let me know 😊 open.substack.com/pub/nicolaie...

Would you look at that! It's no longer just a pile of notes, a word doc or a pdf. It's real! @alexchurchill.bsky.social @donaldwin.bsky.social @headofzeus.bsky.social @watsonlittle.bsky.social @iainmacgregor1.bsky.social Preorder: UK: geni.us/RingOfFire USA: barnesandnoble.com/w/ring-of-fire…

Happy Arch Stanton Day!

One of the rarest and coolest "oddball" weapons. US soldiers with a Polish wz. 35 anti tank rifle captured from the Germans, February 1945. Only around 6,500 were made from 1938-39, so seeing one that has survived this long is quite amazing.

Another bunch of oddball weapons captured from the Germans in 1945. Besides the Kar98ks and a G43, we have older long Mausers and foreign Mausers, Italian carcanos, Norwegian Krags, possibly a Sten Gun, French Lebels or Berthiers and even some old French 1874 Gras rifles!

Here's something super interesting! This photo of Pvt. Fred Green of 69th Infantry Division, taken in March 1945, shows a Danish M.1889 Krag rifle leaning against the wall behind him. This rifle was almost certainly captured from the Danes in 1940 and pushed into German service.

Well, let's give this Substack thing a try! Here's my first article, please read and share. For now, everything will free, so please sign up to not miss out 🙏 open.substack.com/pub/nicolaie...

They start out younget and younger! Pike Jr. (8yo) wants to write a book about Gallipoli for school. Asked if he could borrow a book and set to work. One page in, and I'm happy he didn't forget the French! @peterhart.bsky.social

For the WW2 crowd: A bunch of booklets dropped by the Allies over Denmark for the resistance to inform about how the war is proceeding. One has been disguised as a German booket, printed in Berlin, but actually contains information about the Normandy invasion.

In other news, Pike Jr.'s school drawing needed a bit of explanation today 😅 Does this count as an "occupational hazard"?

What am I looking forward to in 2025? I am looking forward to fire, in chain and ring form. @peterhart.bsky.social @alexchurchill.bsky.social @pikegrey1418.bsky.social
