Today is the 91st anniversary of the last diary entry of the first man who tried to climb Everest solo. Mind you, his plan had been to crash land a plane 14,000 feet up and then stroll the rest of the way, so perhaps he wasn’t destined to succeed

This photo of magnetic core memory popped up, taken by Ansel Adams. I investigated a bit: this memory holds 4000 bits, each stored in a tiny magnetized ferrite ring. It may be from an IBM 705 vacuum-tube business computer. 1/N

Dormers, chimneys and little spires with weather vanes get added automatically when building roofs. E.g., spires are added when all roofs meet in one point, dormers when you build a wall extending partially up a roof. Looking forward to adding lots of little details like this!

my hope is that AI can empower the Dumbest, Least talented slobs i know to replace everything i ever loved with One Million Years of Content

welcome to the future, now your error-prone software can call the cops (this is an Anthropic employee talking about Claude Opus 4)

I've spent *years* researching 3D Platformer Cameras in hopes of making Slime 64's camera "not terrible." In this thread, the White Cylinder is the Camera Target (slightly above the player!), and the Orange Cones represent the "vertical dead zone" where the camera won't follow player movement.

i feel compelled to remind everyone that chatgpt/LLMs are functionally the *opposite* of an actual expert. the more your problems are unusual or novel, the more likely LLMS are to be wrong. they are least helpful when it's most important

This is so fucking good

Stanislav Petrov, the man who saved the world, died on this day in 2017. If you don’t know the story, just read this www.theguardian.com/world/2017/s...

Hey artists! 👋 That art share you’re hosting belongs in a museum! 💙 We’re building a little game that lets you link a Bluesky feed or post and it will display your images in an art gallery. Just like Bluesky, it hides posts for logged-out viewers if you have visibility off. 🙂 #screenshotsaturday

Fixing bugs today and enjoying the sun ☀️

I managed one shot of the cotton candy cumulonimbus before darker, low-level clouds slid into the top of the frame. It was a gorgeous, surreal moment to see rain still falling over the east side of downtown, while fluffy pink clouds and blue sky belied the strength of the storm still in progress

We lost several hectares of native woodland at #GlenFinglas on Sat eve because a disposable BBQ was not disposed of safely. Frustrating, upsetting & so avoidable. There's more dry weather ahead, so please BE FIRE AWARE. Don't light a naked flame or throw cigarette ends into dry vegetation.😡

“Our eyes could potentially be coaxed into a special repair mode above and beyond our natural self-healing abilities, according to a new study, thanks to the delivery of antibodies that trigger nerve cell regeneration in the retina.” #scicomm #neuroskyence www.sciencealert.com/experimental... 🧪 🧠 👁️

Beautiful solar day

We have another company joining the Works With Home Assistant program - Eve! 🥳 Eve is at the forefront of the Matter standard and focus on local control & privacy in the home. I’m working on new features and bug fixes all the time. The health integration seems pretty reliable now

The long-term damage Trump is doing that doesn’t get enough emphasis is: He has very rapidly convinced the world that it can no longer AFFORD for the U.S. to be the “indispensable nation,” and other countries are in the process of restructuring their affairs accordingly. www.ft.com/content/c2eb...

Happy #EarthDay2025! 🌎🌍🌏 We want a smart home to last at least a decade - how do we support sustainability? ♻️ Upcycling: reuse packaging for shipping or art 🔌 Low-powered: software that does more with less 🏠 Local support: less cloud polling = fewer resources used
