When Donald Trump threatens student protests, consider why: throughout modern history, student movements have repeatedly been the catalyst that toppled dictatorships. Authoritarian leaders fear campus activism precisely because it works. Below is a list of 36 student-led pro-democracy movements.🧵

All welcome to tomorrow's research seminar on ‘Minotaurs, monstering, and the representation of autism in popular culture' with Dr Cora Beth Fraser @corabeth.bsky.social. Due to demand, please note a change to the on campus venue to Parkinson Building B.22

“Why didn’t the Eagles just fly the hobbits to Mordor?” You fucking rube, you imbecile. Because by that point they’d been touring constantly since 1976 and Henley and Frey weren’t talking to Fielder The Long Run was a disappointment and they were months away from fighting on stage. Think it through

Why does 25% AfD among young men spark a thousand "what is going on with young men?" posts yet Die Linke 34% among young women generates...nothing at all? Yes, young men voting for the radical right is an important phenomenon. But so is young women going rad left *at even higher rates*.

I understand and appreciate the sentiment I do but thats not what it means either. The idea of being aware of systemic racism being made a byword by the right only to be sanitized as general good heartedness demonstrates how concepts are drained of vigor. variety.com/2025/film/ne...

The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place): 1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

I'm confused here. I agree that 'computers aren't for voting', and the real reason for that is security. That's actually what Trump himself says in the second half of the video clip. But I'd have thought Elon would want it for exactly the same reason? Surely he's all for easily rigged elections?

Always a good read. No fault divorce saves lives. Some of those lives saved are men's.

"Archaeologists have found a substantial piece of the ancient city's first basilica [in London] ... The excavation has so far revealed sections of stone wall that formed the base of the basilica, which would have been two-and-half storeys high." www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k-R...

New discovery underneath the basement of an office block in London: Archaeologists have found a substantial piece of the ancient city's first basilica - a 2,000 year old public building where major political, economic and administrative decisions were made. 🏺

Just so we're clear: Hegseth, or whoever wrote his talking points, has taken both NATO membership and a return to pre-2014 borders (which themselves reflect Russian aggression) off the table *before* negotiating with the Russians. Idiotic from a bargaining stance, not just morally bankrupt

Appreciating the focus on the reality for staff, who are not at fault for this marketised deathspiral and have fought it every step of the way, and universities as a public good. Not a transaction about individual students' future pay cheque, but a good that serves us all.

I'm watching The Red King at the moment, a six-part Wicker Man-esque murder series set on a remote island. Was tickled to learn in ep 5 last night that Gruffudd's daughter, Bethan, is at the University of Leeds doing our very real degree in Sustainable Fashion: courses.leeds.ac.uk/j391/sustain...

YouGov Just 3 in 10 Britons (30%) say that it was right for the UK to vote to leave the EU v 55% who say it was wrong….the lowest proportion of the public saying that Britain was right to vote to leave since the pollster began asking this question after the referendum apple.news/AyI9jhc2eQaK...

This is a national scandal. When will the government wake up and realise they are presiding over the rapid implosion of the UK's world-renowned university sector?

Ancient History on the list to be discontinued at Cardiff. I know we'll do everything possible to fight this, but it's very bad news for our discipline, and for our society. 😔

[reposted] The storm has broken at Cardiff University. Solidarity to everyone who is going to be affected by leaving the university, or by remaining as part of a substantially weakened workforce. Please join a union.

Hello and welcome to our new Bluesky page! This account will post news and updates from Classics at Leeds at the University of Leeds. We have made the decision to leave Twitter / X and will be retiring our account there in a month or so, so please follow us here instead

A reminder that tax avoidance costs the government orders of magnitude more than benefits fraud, and unclaimed benefits that people are genuinely entitled to are more than is lost through benefits fraud.

This is both an incredibly niche thing but I think it should be more of a thing. Caffè Nero subscribes to the British Newspaper Archive so it’s all free on their wifi. There. I said it.

This episode has been released today! Listen to me with host @k8lister.bsky.social on the history of love letters and erotic letters, primarily in antiquity but looking at modern developments too. The episode is titled "The Origins of Sexting": listener discretion is advised!
